Re: Dog "flagging" tail
I've seen some GSP's flag on pen raised birds and running pheasant. When they get on wild birds that don't run it sometimes goes away. It can be both genetic and man made. Both are hard to fix. A lot of times it is anticipation of the launch so no amount of birds in a launcher will fix it. Just depe...

I agree with Kmack 110%. I've seen a LOT of beat down, confused dogs, loosen the reins and let the dog learn. Yes keep them honest, but don't over do it. I am scared by all the obedience talk. That sounds like training for a house pet. If you want a bird dog, you need to help the birds teach your do...

Backing is sight oriented and situational. The bird is there to reinforce the training. I teach backing with the wind to the backing dogs rear intentionally. In the intial stages I'll always have the young backing dog on a CC where I can reinforce the honor.

Don't focus on what you expect from the pup right now but rather what the pup can learn from each encounter. Build upon each experience. Take it slow don't rush things. If the pup has the right genetics and is given time to develop it's own instincts it wil come around in time.

The thing I've seen with the lesser priced collars is they are inconsistent. If you can get your hands on a collar before you buy it and test the levels on yours...

I won't put a dog on pen raised birds until I know, for sure, that dog will not break. Preserve birds are notorious for burrowing in under sage brush out here and once the dog breaks it's a cluster.
