Re: Raw bones or cooked bones?
What about salmonella / ecoli when giving beef knuckle bones? Wouldn't that be a concern?

Re: How much protein is too much
It’s not protein as much as it is the amino acid profile, isn't it? Does corn gluten contain all the essential amino acids or not? Ya know the liver doesn’t “see” if the protein is from animal or grain, but only the amino acids. IMHO I don’t see anything on this track in the thread or ever regarding...

Re: help with biting dog
With a sad heart, i made my decision and put the dog down. Thank you for the words on this forum Brodie I am very sorry. I too have been through your situation with a problem dog. At 14mos and way, way too many close calls I did put the dog down. At least for me I realized due to my feelings for th...

Re: Lab is people aggressive
It’s seems like a dog who is a little bit aggressive is kinda like being a little bit pregnant. The dog has aggression or either it doesn't. Maybe it’s not people, but territory/possession or some other trigger. But IMO growling and biting at the face of a kid = aggression. And when it comes to aggr...

Re: Should a lab be trained to point?
Technically speaking I don't think you can teach any breed of dog to point...including pointing breeds, yes. They will or the won't, it's in the genes or it's not. If your Lab points, great, but it not you will still have a fine dog.

Re: Best Bird Dog
What is the best bird dog? I'm looking into making the big investment and it's always good to have opinions. I'm looking to use the same dog for pointing out quail and pheasant as well as retrieving geese, ducks and dove. Thanks for any and everything! As an aside, there is no "best" birddog only w...

Re: 6 month old just started marking the house!
I took the advice when I got my pup of only allowing the dog to do his business in only place in the yard, and not send him outside to go wherever it wants. This conditions the dog it has a place and not “any” place. I was told it would even help prevent/stop a dog from marking inside the house. So ...

Human health risks with pigeons?
I really have appreciated the Hall of Fame posts regarding pigeons…very, very helpful! I am way too slowly building a small loft (life is so busy isn’t it?). My question deals in the area of pigeons and human health. I didn’t really think of it as a big deal starting my project but last week a man (...

Re: Whoa Training help needed
Well maybe the term Whoa post is somewhat misleading per se. Meaning you aren't teaching Whoa (the command) at all when you use the post. We simply are using the post and the resistance of the check cord/loop to cue the dog how it can "turn off" pressure around its flank. After the dog makes this co...

Re: Whoa Training help needed
Not at all trying to be a smarty-pants, but I do have a question I've been ponder: Why do we say don't ever use an e-collar to teach a dog to command, yet use other methods of pain (i.e. shut off pressure) to teach a dog? Now I get the need to use avoidance training to enforce know commands, but if ...

Re: Whoa Training help needed
I’m not an experienced trainer at all…but if one tries to teach WHOA by giving the command following by pain within 1.5 seconds of the word. I would think the dog would starting believing this whoa word is a bad thing , and hate it or show fear whenever ya say WHOA. Doesn't that teach the dog WHOA m...

Re: need advice on dog
I once heard an expression that went something like, “The worst judge of their dog’s training/behavior is their owner.” There certainly is a degree of truth to that. My own vet recently told me since he was a vet he thought he could keep a dog with behavioral problems because well again he was a vet...

Re: need advice on dog
Yes, I have had experience with having to keep my kids separated from a dog I owned. But I don’t think you want to read about the result, since you are already set on keeping the dog. Firsthand experience with a dog that had behavioral issues and making him an outside dog and otherwise separating hi...

Re: Exceed Dog Food
Since a dog is by nature largely a carnivore as also seen by its relatively short digestive tract, than why is a “hot” high protein diet bad for them? I mean they are design to eat very large percentages of meat by nature??? Always found that a confusing point when it comes to the “too hot” discussi...

Re: Puppy Aggression
The advice was referring to if the 12wk old dog has true full blown aggression. IF the dog does meeting aggression with aggression will be very bad (at any age), IF it is just a bratty young dog than it won't casue a problem. Giving blind advice over the Internet when it comes to aggression isn't a ...

[quote="highcotton I agree with Denise. It's hard to evaluate a pup from this end. Re: Puppy Aggression
My point is one can if they wish to avoid all the “training” to modify a puppy that may have a weak temperament. That is an option. And IMHO a very reasonable one if one wants to think objectively without be lead down a path by emotional attachment. We are not talking about a human child, but a cani...

Re: Puppy Aggression
If I had a 12wk old puppy do this I would first call the breeder to discuss return options/refunds. I would in no way keep the puppy, I feel really bad for you. I have experienced dog agreesion issues that grow worse which at 14mos of age lead to the emergency room for stiches for me. I learned life...
