Re: I thought it was about the dogs
I have been married for many years. Good on "scripting"...eh, on the planted birds and...there are many shows on-air. Some more vocal than others...some have shooters doing superb jobs of backing a birddog. Never asked you to justify anything.....how you feel is for you to consider. I can handle la...

[quote="UglyD" As for Maltodextrin, if it is given within 20 minutes or so of the "end of the day", it does a great job of replenishing the glycogen stores in the muscles for the next day's energy. . Re: I thought it was about the dogs
If one depends upon pen-raised birds for their living or in filming a tv show then I reckon that one must strive to justify what is needed or ignores the bad actors in scripted shooting situations. My wonder is...is this thread all about ginning up comments on a blog or is a new book forthcoming? M...

Well, my camera guys outdid themselves and got epic footage of ruffs and woodcocks in Northern Minnesota ... just as they do on all the wild quail, pheasants, huns and chukars ... sage grouse, sharpies and chickens we've done in past episodes. Yep, pretty tough - they did better than the host did on...

The root cause of our similar problem years ago was a wad of swallowed grass - it would wander around in the belly, blocking the food's entrance to the stomach periodically. Wouldn't show on an x-ray, but one day up it came and the problem went away. Good luck.

Duct tape alone works pretty well. Be careful not to wrap too tightly. When they fall off, you're out a few cents. In lava country, even Lewis boots wear out, Cordura even faster, while a roll of duct tape goes a long way.

Contradiction, not really. Couldn't the long-term needs of a dog's body be met by protein and carbohydrates the day/week/month before, while a quick, short-term energy boost be created by fat? I think that's how human athletes do it.

I'm surprised there haven't been more mentions of bloat/stomach twist. Sure, the research is not definitive but why take a chance? As noted earlier, the "nutrition" comes from food eaten many hours before the hunt, so a morning feed only fills up the G.I. tract. Purina research has shown the negativ...

Maybe you've had the same situation occur - your old dog takes longer and longer to um, you know, poop. The poor guy looks embarassed at holding us up on our walks! I've hunted the Dakotas and E. Montana a dozen times with all types of dogs and my only contribution to this discussion would be to keep your pointers out of row crops like corn and milo. Roosters will race down those rows, and your pointer will do his darndest to catch them. Tighter cover, ditches,...

Re: Shotgun for Small Person
Several have mentioned "fit," and I agree, but it might need clarification. Watch most kids and women shoot for the first time, and you'll see them set their feet like a rifle shooter - one foot way in front of the other. This prevents the butt of the gun from finding it's natural home in the should...

Snakebite and Benadryl
Over the years, I've had lots of conversations with veterinarians about first aid for a rattlesnake bite. Among the other solutions, an antihistamine like Benadryl is often recommended. I carry the capsules and if needed would empty the powder under my dog's tongue to hasten the absorption process. ...

While you see me hunt a lot of preserve birds on TV (for the record, about half of my shows), I hunt a lot of wild birds for work and fun (about 40-60 days per year).
