I agree with Ray. I have had both and of the opinion now that it really is unnecessary to remove them, not sure if it impacts them to remove or not.

Taking a FDSB dog and registering it AKC then using that dog to defend AKC dogs as good hunters is illogical. You could take a AKC show champion and register it FDSB then use it as an example of elegantly conformed AF dogs too but it would not be logical.

After reading the OP a second time, I would say they are overall very different. If your interest lies in akc showing an akc Irish setters would be a wise choice. If you are looking for a hunting dog the red setter would be your best bet.

Re: "Elhew " Pointer sires
You might try Bryan Hayes at choke bore kennels, or Elhew kennels.....not sure but recall he aquired Ehlew from Bob Wehle.
Re: Sharpies
I find them comparable to pheasant. They are a ball to hunt over a pointer so I actually prefer hunting them to pheasants with a pointing dog.
Re: Sharpies
I will give that a try. I like to make sharp tail and elk gumbo with mine

No but he looks like a nice dog. I like early starters and natural retrievers myself. I would call and talk to the owner about him... Took a look at those sites! Liked a superior male named "Striking Elhew Seeker" anyone have any input on him?
I also like that he is still a young sire.

Wild apple kennel I believe has some nice elhew blood out of Wynot ace. I think nitro kennels and superior kennels has elhew blood too. I have heard that crossing Blackhawk to elhew is pretty good nick. Matt has some nice dogs with elhew fiber base.

Huns pheasant and sharpies. Katy was the leftover from a litter I had several years ago....I think she has turned out to be a fantastic dog, with very good ground speed and range, fantastic animation and as you can see she can find wild birds... :D http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f227/ymepointer/2...

I think Ray is spot on. Brian Hayes(sp) owns Elhew Kennels now i think, and still breeds under that kennel legally. His are the only "real' elhew dogs techically anymore, but most pointers these days have some elhew in there blood.

Natural backing is definately genetic, but it can be trained in as well. I have seen both naturals and non backers in the same litter. Go here for resources to find a hunting weim. http://huntingweimalliance.com If I recall correctly, aprox 90% of NON german bred weims are show/pet stock, not selected for hunting traits and so, 90% or better don't hunt! The ones that are bred to hunt are pretty hard to find, but if you go to the HW...
