Re: Coyotes and Dogs
A women just last week had her dog snatched off a well used trail just outside of neighboring homes here in Salt Lake. It was a single coyote that took it. They only found the dogs sweater, hours later. Hunting sage grouse one time years ago with my friends wirehair bitch, she disappeared for a spe...

Great Customer Service ...
A buddy bought an expensive to us piece of gear from Gun Dog Supply about 6 months ago. It worked for a month or so and went south. He was beyond the GDS 30 day money back guarantee, so to the mfr he went. Five defective replacements later the mfr told him sorry, done. Last friday we sent GDS an ema...

english setter....... you should have seen the glare in my dogs eyes. didn't know where that came from though, where is the tail  That's funny! I have the opposite - I'd guess about a third of the people that guess say brittany. I thing it's the color, they're just not used to seeing a setter...

Re: Bumping or Wild Flush
Ben was trained to run a figure 8 pattern around the hunter to help when you're hunting downwind. (I think the trainer said alot of dogs or maybe alot of setters do it pretty naturally.?) Anyway when the dog quarters out a ways and crosses in front of you he'll hit the downwind scent cone. He'll als...

I use 6's in the first tube, 5's in the second, and 1300 fps or more. I use plated shot, takes less feathers into the meat. I seldom hit the center of the pattern so don't often tear up the meat too bad.
Great pics! I use a hydration bladder too. Good way to go.

Re: Bumping or Wild Flush
Sounds like your dog is a keeper and you need a new hunting buddy! Dogs don't smell birds if the wind don't get to their nose. They could run right by a bird a foot away and no know it's there on the up wind side. It's the wind that carry's the scent> Exactly what I was thinking. Let your buddy hun...

I got out with a buddy for a few days last week. Pretty good conditions other than 15-20 mph winds most of the time. Here's a few pics. Good choice on a setter! Aside from being tough, driven bird dogs, they're great buddies the rest of the time.

You can do it, just don't get a puppy and go through the training phase, get a finished dog. They come up from time to time. Buddy of mine found a 5 yr old finished short hair that is a great dog, mature, mellow, good hunter, divorce case so dog just needed a home. Not saying short hair over brit or...

Second hatch maybe? Here are a few more that show ground cover and terrain I like. Anytime you can find cheatgrass on a bench along a steep slope like the third and last pics it's gold. You asked about roads, once you're on the gravel roads it doesn't seem to me like it makes much difference how far...

Usually when I talk chukar most people run and hide. :D I have dogs on the ground hunting chukar over 50 days a year. Now we're talking, and you run setters too! Can't be all bad! Rimrock, cheat grass and a water source - that's all you need. Head for the top and work your way down til you find the...

We hunt se oregon too. I hunted over a dozen different dogs there last year and saw alot foot problems. Most of them were in no condition for that kind of abrasive rock and steep country and didn't last more than 4-5 hours. Good dogs, just steep rough country and some of the most abrasive rock you'l...

Good timing, I was just logging on to ask about it too. A buddy and I are thinking about going back to eastern Montana this fall. We're wondering about some spots along the way where we could pull off the road for a day and hunt huns or pheasant or anything with feathers for that matter! We hunted a...

Thanks Cajun, I think so too. We keep waiting for the bad on this dog but no sign of it yet. He cowers when he's loaded into the rig. He'll figure out soon enough that means fun is on the way! That's about it.

I live in Sisters in central Oregon on the east slope of the Cascades. The first pic is behind the house in the woods. New GSP in the pack ...
I got a message a few weeks ago about a 10 month old GSP rescue dog. Took a look and into the truck he went. He spent a few weeks here getting settled in, now he's at Don's for a few months running with him and his boys. I'm pretty excited about him. He'll end up here whether he pans out as a hunter...

Re: ever had hunting success with a rescue?
Well, I'm hopeful on this one! Got this little 10 month old guy a few weeks ago. He was basically abandoned in an outdoor kennel with another dominant dog. Was mud caked, emaciated, a week or two from being put down by the owner. I haven't had a shorthair before. Hunted with em and always liked em. ...

Re: sending dogs to a trainer
It would be hard to send my dog away for 4 months too. I was lucky enough to find a breeder close to home, close enough that after I did the basic obedience training with him, I'd drop the dog off in the morning, pick him up in the evening. I got to know the trainer pretty well, talked to him most e...

I drew a hair tag for what's called the High Desert unit, a big part of the se corner of Oregon. There are a fair no. of animals, but it's alot of square miles. A couple of hunting buddies drew it too so sounds like we'll work it together.

It's nice to see someone else running setters on chukar. Up here it seems to be all GSP's and Britts. (not that there's anything w/ that...) Here's another setter that runs on chukar, more than anything else so far. http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g61/glennbrown/Chukar%20gypsy/IMG_0806.jpg http:/...
