I agree with using the dogs name, but I tap em on the right flank. Tapping on the head can lead to a dog breaking when you go to collar him away from a find. If you don't grab the collar or slip and tap the head. Bye bye, pick em up.

As I write this I can't hold back the tears. Yesterday afternoon the bird dog world lost one of the greats. Jim Demarco passed over the rainbow bridge way too early. I'm not sure about the need for a governor. If you walk or ride too fast the judges usually stop watching anyway.

I quoted the Spaniel Hunting Test Rules acutately as to pigeons. And I am confident that if your listening skills are no better than your reading skills as demonstrated here, it is more likely you misunderstood the judges than they were wrong. You never said it was from the spaniel. And I told you ...

Just a little caution. Be careful not to get bit when lifting the flank. The reason they let go is because they want to nip at your hand.

If you are going to trial that dog then a trainer will take it slow to keep style, etc. A dog can be broke in a couple of months, but don't expect any style or run. They're really not broke, they just have the chase taken out of them. I would bet your trainer has a big picture in mind. You should as...

It doesn't take much to break a dog by one.... You also don't have to run a breed that won't make it in broke stakes if you don't want to. Last I checked they didn't issue you a dog to run, it was a choice like entering a broke dog in puppy, derby, and gun dog. I dont tell you that you can't run an...

They work just fine. The best way is to use a helper to pull the string, and a check cord on the dog so you can keep him from jumping on the launcher. If your dog is staunch enough and you can walk in front of him on point, then a helper usually isn't needed. Most companies that make automatics also...
