I hunt south of Pierre and the bird numbers are way, way down in that area. Last year's severe drought and the lack of cover last winter knocked them for a loop, then they didn't get a hatch at all this spring because of poor cover and bad weather. On a positive note, they have very good cover this ...

A friend who runs hounds on coyotes has a GWP that he runs right with them. The GWP can't keep up but has great endurance, always ends up with the pack by the time the kill dog comes into play. Really no point in running her with the hounds other than he just loves her for her endurance. She is a se...

Growing up, I got to duck hunt on the North Platte river with my Father and his friends. Nearly all serious duck hunters then had chessies and I've seen some outstanding ones. Cut the hair between the toes and under the paw between pads. Put a bit of vaseline between pads when you go out for walking or running. Problem solved. I use my mouth to whistle. I have three commands that my dogs recognize and I enforce with the collar. I'm a pheasant hunter and I don't like hunting with guys who shout commands. Besides, it's so much easier to communicate with the dog with a simple tongue whistle.

If you are a hunter, shoot the "bleep" bird. If you are a dog trainer/trialer, do whatever you think will be best of rthe dog.
I have yet to see a pointing dog ruined by shooting birds they don't point. Hunt the dog as much as possible, shoot what you can and he'll learn along the way.
