Re: Am I Stressing Too Much?

I know that you're trying, however this all stems, or most of it from the fact that you apparently don't have an organized training program you're following. Before you ever get a dog, you should have gotten and studied a training program and written out the sequence you would hope to proceed in.. ...

Re: Am I Stressing Too Much?

Ontariofella, I just realized this may in fact be the same dog that you had previously discussed eating birds? If it is, and indeed she is actively hunting and finding birds, then rushing in to try and catch them repeatedly, you may have some issues that are beyond most armature’s ability level to ...

Re: Am I Stressing Too Much?

Hey, where in Northern Ontario are you? I'm outside of Thunder Bay, Slate River area. I have no pigeons at the moment (our dog is almost 13, still hunting hard) - but I'll be getting a loft going in the spring, in anticipation of a pup. If you're in the area, I'd be happy to help you out in the spr...

Re: Am I Stressing Too Much?

You have to also realize that there is no tougher bird to TRAIN a dog on than grouse. Why? Because the dog is out of your view most of the time and you have no idea if it's working a bird or running wild. That's why you should always start with planted birds, birds in electronic traps. that way you...

Her woah is strong unless she sees a bird. If the birds are holding in thick brush(not visible) then I can usually Woah her, but that situation is rare around here.

Did the pup get any training with a check cord and release traps when she was younger?
I was only able to do one pigeon session with her when she was about 11 months. Getting training birds in northern Ontario is not easy.

Re: Am I Stressing Too Much?

My only suggestion would be to run her first in a birdless area for about an hour, to burn off some of that adolescent energy. THEN take her hunting. What you are experiencing is not uncommon when training hard charging dogs on wild birds. You cannot effectively control the situation because it is ...

Thank you guys for the replies. I planned on using this dog for some early season duck hunts as well so it would be really nice to get her retrieving. I will look into that program, thanks Garrison. So my GSP turned 1 year old last week. She is my first gundog and I have been training her on my own since I have not met anyone else in Northern Ontario that trains hunting dogs. Hello everyone! This forum has been an awesome resource in training my first gundog, a GSP who is now about 9 months old. Everyone does it different. Personally when I am taking a young pup out what I want from them is to learn how and where to hunt. Chasing is neither here nor there - it is a non event. Re: How far do y'all let pups chase?

13 weeks is pretty darn young to be worrying about losing a handle on a pup. I expect most of it is your worry, and less of it is the pup’s accelerator peddle. You may want to get to a more manageable field rather than the thick woods for your initial puppy time, and bird introduction. Get out and ...

Re: How far do y'all let pups chase?

One more thing about letting it chase in the cover your talking about. I'd take a close look at the check cord she's dragging. Should be hard core to bounce off brush and avoid tangling in it and, very important, hope there no knot in the end that could catch in a "v" in the brush and hang it up! T...

Re: How far do y'all let pups chase?

Once a dog has an active interest in birds, letting them chase does no good at all. It simply endangers the pup, destroys any obedience the pup may have, and makes breaking the chase more difficult later. I DO let them chase until 16 weeks and that's it. After that I do have them retrieving clip wi...

Just curious how far and how much you guys let your pups chase wild birds? Reason I'm asking is because my 13 week old GSP is obsessed with birds now. Re: GSP Temper Tantrums

There might be some disparity between what you consider plenty of exercise, and what she thinks is plenty. It sounds like she needs more. What does your hour of playtime involve? If it's rolling a ball across the family room floor for her to chase, it's obviously not enough. If it's turning her out...

Have you looked into some ecollars with geofencing features? You can set a perimeter using GPS and it will notify you and apply stim when the dog tries to leave the perimeter. That's good to know. I want the most range I can get because the bush out here is dense with lots of rolling hills.

Do you happen to know if the preloaded topo maps on the Alpha 200 cover Canada as well? I'm assuming they only cover the US since it's not intended to be used in Canada.
