Re: 2022 AZ Desert Quail
Hahaha. The quail on the tailgate are Gambels quail. I killed 8 quail that morning and oddly 7 of them were males. The females are more drab, without the rust colored patch on the head.

2022 AZ Desert Quail
I’m just now heading home from an Arizona hunt. What a blast it was! Can’t wait to go back. This hunt crept up on me. My good buddy, Blake, and I drew a Coues deer tag for southern AZ. I’ve been in the middle of moving, while also trying to run a business and take care of children so I didn’t have a...

Re: Training whoas?
I think you said you started the pup at 6mos. Big problem for me right there. At 6 mos they truly are a pup and your watching puppy junk hoping for something else. As for the traps, sounds like they are remote traps and you have the best thing for doing a dog in my opinion. Beauty of the remote is ...

Re: Brittany Puppy Training/Bird Exposure
I have a brittany that is 7.5 months old. She is the opposite of your pup. At 10 weeks old she wanted to chase sparrows, butterflies, and bumblebees. She is so distracted by the sights and smells that she gets bored retrieving after a couple throws. I introduced her to pigeons early on but it wasn't...

Re: Training whoas?
That is a cat! :) but also a beautiful Brittany. Only had one horror story that I can think of, and that seemed to fix itself. We were participating in an AKC field trial. Dog was doing well. Then the dog notices a couple big geese on the pond near the trial grounds honking away. Off she goes. Refu...

Re: Training whoas?
Heres my uh oh horror story....It went like this.We went out to the woods and brought a shotgun cause we've seen bear tracks and mountain lions. My birddogs have had No gun intro, a little bird work but nothing much. Anyway, there fine with construction noises and other loud noises. I didn't relize...

Training whoas?
Not training whoa. Training whoas. I have two young bird dogs I'm working with right now, a DD and a brittany. I've been spending considerable time training obedience, bird work, and blood trailing. Had my first uh oh moment with the britanny today. She is a bit over 6 months and today was the day t...

Most common pointing breed
Hey folks, I’m wondering what is the most common pointing dog breed in the United States and Canada? Defined by the number of dogs that are used for hunting and separately what about most common trial dog. Secondly, what’s the most common you find in your area? How has those figures changed from 10-...

Re: Video: My simple pigeon loft
The entire bottom is double layered in wire. It's surely not an impenetrable barrier. I do notice hawks roosting on the top sometimes but the roosts are far enough from the perimeter that they haven't gotten any pigeons.

Video: My simple pigeon loft
Hello all, I made a video of the loft I built from scraps laying around. I did it in preparation for my new bird dogs. I currently have a French Brit that is 14 weeks old, named Sitka (terrible name in hindsight), also I am getting a DD next weekend. My little terrier thinks he is a bird dog as well...

Re: Versatile dogs on predators
Oh and I see you are down in Riverside. The dog I’m getting is from a fellow down in Riverside, he came well recommended by other DD breeders closer by me and has a litter due in mid-October. My deposit is in for 1st pick on a male pup. I’ve been very clear and detailed with all the potential breede...

Re: Versatile dogs on predators
Garrison - yes I have considered them. I’d like to get one sometime, especially for squirrel. Most the breeders of good dogs seem to be back east from me. I’m just gonna start with the training of one pup for now. I very well could end up with another dog (maybe a Jagd, Patterdale, or cur) by the en...

Re: Rabbit Hunting with Drahthaar
I too am interested in a little more clarification and hearing from people who have hunted rabbits with “versatile” breeds. Some have eluded to the idea that it would be difficult to steady the dog to flush, wing and shot if you also encourage it to point and chase rabbits. Can’t have the best of bo...

Versatile dogs on predators
Was going to post this in my other thread but it got lengthy enough where I figured it ought to go in it’s own. I will be getting a DD pup soon. My experience in the past with hunting dogs of my own are a very wise Airedale and an equally smart but slightly aloof Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. My hunt...

Re: Intro and question about dogs and pigeons
Garrison - Sonora isn’t to far, I’m a little bit north. I don’t get down that way much but there is a wildlife area near Sonora that I’ve hunted a few times. Thanks for the input. I chose a DD because I want an energetic dog with lots of prey drive. My Airedale was an incredible dog. Once I got in t...

Re: Intro and question about dogs and pigeons
Garrison, I never intended to imply that the dog would have free reign of the property all day or be unsupervised. I don’t need it to be a farm dog, but I do need it to be good on the ranch. It does seem like I’ll need to be more vigilant than my previous hunting dogs. I’ve had an Airedale and WPG. ...

Re: Intro and question about dogs and pigeons
Switch grass - when you say it would be best to have the two lives occur in separate locations. How far apart are we talking? The area I plan to do a bit of training in varies between 1/4 - 1 mile from where the dog will be spending the majority of its waking life. I will also most be taking daily w...

Intro and question about dogs and pigeons
Hello all, My names Shane. I live in the Sierra Foothills of CA. After a lot of deliberation, phone calls, and research I’ve put a deposit on a DD pup. I will be spending the next couple months preparing and should have the pup by mid-December, provided all goes well with the birth, etc. I’m a hunte...
