Chinese Herbal Treatment

So this past fall I noticed something was a little off with my girl. She would point just fine but she was having trouble with picking up her birds and it got to where she would run to the downed bird and just refuse to pick it up, and occasionally around the house she would literally shriek with pa...

Re: Death Shake on Retrieves

You may want to try a Dokken Deadfowl retrieving dummy. They have hard plastic heads and legs/feet that are designed to give the dog an unpleasant whack when they do the death shake. They make them in lots of different styles, and you can inject them with scent. I imagine you could probably wrap a p...

New to beeper?

Quick question:

I just picked up a Garmin beeper for a steal. My dog hunts with a bell but I was thinking about trying the beeper on wild grouse and having it run silent and then beep only on point.
Any introduction training or familiarization I should do with her prior to using?

Re: First Hunt - Looking for Tips

In addition to everything said above, I'll add this: You will most likely have a few friends and/or family that you will invite to hunt over your dog with you. Establish the ground rules from day one with everyone. 1. No shooting anything on the ground. 2. Tell your other shooters where you want the...

Re: Tick control

We had been using Heartgard and Frontline Plus for years and recently my vet suggested switching to Simparica Trio. It's a once-per-month chewable that she says is actually more effective for fleas and ticks than the topical Frontline. It also has the heartworm preventative and roundworm and hookwor...

Re: Itching - Food Allergy?

Appreciate the reply. I'm not on the grain free bandwagon, either. Always had good success with Pro Plan even going back to my LEO K9 days. Don't really want to drop it. I guess it could be seasonal. I doubt it's overbathing or residual soap. I bathed her about a month ago after our last hunt of the...

Itching - Food Allergy?

My 4 year-old ES is itching and scratching an awful lot over the last couple months. I have her on Pro Plan Performance 30/20 for the last few months and I'm wondering if it could be the issue. What are some good alternatives that I can try? I'm thinking I'll try a small bag of something else and se...

Former police K9 handler here. I hope this is allowed, but check out Ray Allen Manufacturing. (rayallen.com) I/we used to get a lot of our LE K9 supplies through them.
Apologies if this isn't allowed.

Re: joint care

I supplement my dogs food with Nupro Silver. I came to like Nupro products when I was a handler for the Sheriff's Office. I used to supplement my partner with the Gold. The Silver is generally considered for older dogs because of the glucosamine/chondroitin in it, but with an athletic dog it's perfe...

Re: Got bit

First thing I'd do regardless is remove any food-based type of chew items from him permanently. No rawhides, real bones, ears, anything that is from a real animal. Stick with Nylabones and other synthetic-based toys and chews. Is he also being over-protective of his food? If that's the case it point...

Re: Sporting vs Field. A little advice needed.

So here's went to the range/Pro Shop and checked out both used Guerini's. Didn't like the Summit as it was in pretty rough shape. Wasn't even sure if I'd be able to get the chokes out as they'd been in there quite a while and didn't look like they were in any mood to unscrewed with normal tools. I r...

This is all about dominance, not getting their rocks off. Even weeks old pups in a litter do it.

Sporting vs Field. A little advice needed.

So I'm in the market for a new shotgun. I don't NEED one, but I WANT one. I've been selling off some unused pieces to finance this purchase and I'm finally ready. I'm specifically looking for a 12 gauge O/U as I don't have one. I have a couple 20's already, and of course a couple 12 pumps and a semi...

Re: Pants and vest

I've been buying second-hand upland jeans or brush pants on eBay from time to time. I usually find ones that are in new or near-new condition and get them for $15-25. Got few upland or shooting shirts like that, too. Of course, even of they're brand new I wash them first but everything so far has be...

Re: Bird Introduction Gone Wrong?

Answer to your question is pretty simple for the vast majority of dog's. Don't take it from him, have him give it to you, simple. When he comes back with the bird be down on one knee. You'll notice doing that will create a pocket against your leg. I'm right handed. Take your right hand and put it o...

My setter is on the small side at only 35lbs. I simply went to a 3/4" collar. Plenty to choose from through Gun Dog Supply. I happen to like the ones with the center ring but to each his own.

Re: Looking for ideas for mounting a crate to my ATV

Thanks guy, I kinda figured I'd need the ratchet straps, I'm more looking for ideas or thoughts as to whether or not a regular old plastic dog crate would work, and how to tie that down without crushing it. I'd love to by a Ruffland but even if I ordered it today I'd be waiting close to 4 months for...

Looking for ideas for mounting a crate to my ATV

Grouse hunting in the Catskill mountains of New York means a LOT of climbing up steep hills and old logging trails. I'd like to find a good way to mount a crate/kennel on the rear rack of my ATV. I saw something online (Dusty Dawg?) but to be honest I think the $450+ cost is just too steep. I'm look...

Another new guy here.

Hi All, I'm new to the forum. I'm Joe and I'm from New York, a few miles south of the West Point Military Academy. I'm 56 and a semi-retired LEO. By semi-retired, I mean I "officially" retired after an almost 34 year career and now I'm back with my department on a part-time basis which mostly just g...
