Look into a pinch collar, be gentle with it and he will learn to turn the pressure off by not pulling by himself.

I see this as quite confusing for the dog. You want him to heel some of the time but not all of the time. I'm trying to make some decisions on the best way to train my GSP to walk on a lead. He's young and likes to pull, to the point that it aggravates me. We've worked on heel and he's improving, but we live in town and some days we don't have time to train and it's just walking through the neighborhood...
