Re: Wagging tail on point

Could be a number of things. That "wagging" is called flagging and it could be that the dog does is on pen birds because of odd scent.

Re: grouse handling

With my dogs, time and experience most of the time changes that. In the grouse woods though its different. Cover is much more dense, sometimes they get turned around, and it takes more time to work bird scent in such a congested area. My dogs circle and it's ok as long as I know they are hunting and...

I just wanted to know if the HeartGaurd was good stuff. As I said the dog acts normal and shows no sign of lethargy or sickness. The stools from what I saw were normal because he feeds the same as I do and the stools come out firm. (SportMix) I don't know what the deal is, I mean, he turns the dog l...

My buddy wanted me to get on here and get some of you guys' opinions on the situation of his dog. Just by looking at the dog, everything looks fine. He is as jumpy and as excited as ever and does not seem to show any signs of sickness or discomfort. On the other hand, when he goes to feed him, the d...

GSP9, I have had two dogs come down with lyme's and it's one of the saddest things to see a dog go through. Fortunately, it sounds like you have caught it early and have started to treat correctly. One thing that I have started looking for now in dogs that I buy is if the sire or dam has had a histo...

Re: Bells and Beepers When Hunting

Personally, I like a bell (not a turkey bell but a bigger one) and a beeper. I like a remote controlled beeper to run on point-only mode, and I like a bell for tracking the dog, and plus the bell is old school which is cool. I hunt the mountains of south appalachia so bells and beepers are almost ne...

Re: Potential Elhew Puppies

In my opinion on a dog that had troubles the first go around with pups, I don't know if I could chance the $1,500 stud fee. There are plenty of other credible Elhews out there that could throw you some good pups. Its all in how picky you want to be with the stud. You'll do the right thing. Good luck.

Some breeders clip tails and don't tell. They have their reasons but I have nothing for it. I jumped a guys case two years ago on a pointer I was to buy and when the dog showed up it was obvious it had been clipped. Leave em' long and poker straight for me.

Put a quail into the launcher and stand off the cut-out on the bird on point. Then Check your dog in on a cord to where he cannot see the cut-out pointed, (maybe behind a barn or brush). When you bring the dog around the obstacle that is blocking the view of the situation, the pointed cut-out will c...

Take the pup into grouse cover and pray that she is bumping birds because that means she is finding birds. After a few bumps on wild birds she will soon figure out a safe distance when she starts standing wild birds. Let the bird teach the dog. If she is handling planted birds well, then she should ...

Re: Building a new dog run / kennel any suggestions

I use decking for some of my kennels. They work well and are inexpensive. I used rough cut lumber and try to put a coat of urethane on it every year. JUst spray it out and sometimes you may have to use a straight hoe or something to loosen up the waste. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e89/THBE/Dog...
