Re: Training question!!
Just ribbing Terry about the fillet. Met him at the Invitational, friend and I had brought some fillet minon for the grill. Terry was looking hungry, I wanted to offer him some fillet but since he owns a shorthair I thought a hotdog was good enough!  No, I actually still feel bad that we...

Re: Building your first pigeon coop.....
I transitioned adult birds from someone else's coop, and most of the birds hung around. I did keep them in the coop for a couple of months, then only let them out in the evening right before dark so they would only fly for a bit then come back in to roost. Probably did that for a month then started ...

Re: Building your first pigeon coop.....
Jester, I don't know what optimum is for pigeons, but in my coop (the brown one in this thread) I have had up to 50 birds. Right now I have about 30 and they are producing and seem to be doing just fine. All of these birds are homer/roller crosses. I keep my killer feral birds in a temporary cage th...

Re: Rubber Dog Boots
They work well, they walk kind of funny when you put them on, but they get used to them. We like them as the sand, etc. will fall out of them when they pick up their feet, instead of it staying in the bottom of a normal boot and rubbing their pads. Here is how we make our boots: http://www.oknavhda....

Re: training with pigeons
Hattrick, I started my coop last fall with a bunch of roller/homer crosses. I left them in the coop for a month or so to get acclimated, then would leave the door open during the day for about a week to let them come and go. I then started taking them and dropping them off different distances to get...

Re: Building your first pigeon coop.....
My coop is painted a brown color to try and blend in with the trees. The pigeons have no problem coming back to it. As far as droppings are concerned I just scoop them once in a while and put them in a trash bag. I know there is talk of possibly getting a respiratory issue, so I try to keep my mouth...

A,
He looked good out there during the test, don't worry about the track. He is young and until you somewhat teach him to keep his nose down for track or finding dead he will have a tendancy to just search. You did good, congratulations! Have fun with him!!!!

Re: Dog Boots
We get lots of sandburs and this is a cheap and excellent way to boot the dog: http://www.oknavhda.com/boots.htm Leaves the bottom for sand to fall out instead of getting in and rubbing the pads raw. Plus if you lose one they are cheap to make. Make a couple of sets and keep an extra in your vest wh...

Re: Ring Worm
My son had ringworm once. We went to the doc, got some cream, and it did not work. We then talked to my mother-in-law and we used an old time-worn remedy, cut a piece off a green walnut husk and rub the juice on the ringworm. It worked like a charm and will be what I use if we ever get another.

Re: Dog wont retrieve ducks
Force fetch. Your dog has to know that when you send him out he can't come back without a duck/bird/baseball/set of keys/whatever. I know you said he was "force fetched" but unless you can consistently make him fetch anything and everything, multiple times, there will be times when he might not want...

I noticed the dog moved a bit on point. My question is, if you train with deer like you do birds, how do you get the darn deer in the launcher so you can pop it to keep the dog steady?

Re: Pigeon lofts and cats
So far this week I have caught 2 coons and a possum, so there are enough critters around. I probably will stop trapping as I cannot get them all, so will just have to ensure that I keep the coop closed up tight at night and my ducks in another enclosure.

Re: Pigeon lofts and cats
You have to build in a door of some type to close off the loft. I only allow my pigeons to fly right before sunset, that way they get to fly but they don't do it for long and they come back to roost, then I close it up tight. Well, almost always close it up... The time I left it open I lost 3 birds ...

Re: dog boot's
We get lots of sand burs in Oklahoma, and this is about the best boot you can use. It leaves the bottom open to allow the sand, etc. to fall out but closes up when the dog steps down. And if you lose some they are cheap to make.

I also use 3 1/2" for Turkey, and agree it might be a bit overkill, but when you get on the edge of the range it is nice to know you have that bit extra. However, if I ever have to take a second shot I always wonder how much I am flinching...

Also, the watering system will freeze in the winter, but when it is not that cold it is very nice to not have to fill every so often, and it also allows for easy dumping of the water if there is feed in it. For light freezes I don't worry about it as I have garden hose as the supply line, the watere...

Re: Training pigeons to home............
I assume the bobs are at the back of the settling cage..??? If so then I would just start feeding them in the cage, put down every other bob, and make sure the bobs can swing both ways (in and out). They will start going to the feed through the bobs since there is room and get used to them. Then jus...

Re: NAVHDA NA tracking
One thing you also need to do for the track is to actually use live birds (pheasant) running on different terrains. One NA test may use the pheasant in grass 10-12" tall, and another may use it on ground that is close to bare. You may have no wind on the day of the test or you may have 20-30 mph win...

Re: "Starting with pigeons"
For right now I am only going to have killer pigeons in the coop so it is not an issue, but at some point I want to start raising some homers. I do have a pair of red-tails nesting close-by, as well as at least one young one in the nest and starting to fly so will eventually have to think about them...

Anyone have any experience, good or bad, with a coop in the woods (medium density)? Just wondering if they need open space or can get along well with obstructions like a wooded area...

It's about time you showed up.....I will be needing a few more shooters. I'll get them at the next training day. Coveyrise64 ...
