Re: GSP and rabbit hunting

If you have ever ran beagles on rabbit you will never be satisfied with a GSP's job. If you were after hare (bigger more scent easier tracking) your chances would be better but under MY conditions (ohio) a verstile hunting dog wouls come up short. I have a drahthaar who recieved a "10" (pretty good ...

Re: Hunting dead (runners)

I have always wondered how the nose sorts out all the bird scent and is able to lock on the injured bird..Last season I had my DD out and shot a bird and was SURE it was down stone cold dead....He went to the area of fall then kept wanting to go up a steep ravine...I was pissed as i thought he was j...

Re: Fitness and endurance

You should join the wayne county coonhunters (it used to be a coonhunters club many years back)in Wooster, Ohio. We have about 200 acres of land that has great cover for training plus we have a homing pigeon loft. Is only about 20 min from Akron as it is on the east side of Wooster...This guy could ...

Re: Training advice....

Were you bringing him in cross wind on the birds? Were you using launchers? If so, as soon as you see him crouch in preparation for the spring, launch the bird. I'd be careful with the ecollar corrections around the birds, unless he's ff'd on the collar as well. If the dog is NOT ff'd on the collar...

Training advice....

I had my 1 1/2 year old DD out on some birds(pigeons) today and it was like taking a major step backward. It seemed he wanted to jump-in on every bird today...When he is on point you can see him loading up his hips ready to lauch right in....I use launchers so I have been lauching as soon as he begi...

Re: Drahthaar without beard?

I have a slick that is out of simlar breeding (Elk's sister) and although I wanted a beard...the DRIVE is still there. I think even a slick DD has more under coat than a GSP. On first glance, mine looks like a GSP, but when you feel his coat it is more corse and dense. It will be intresting to see h...

Re: Rabbits and Pigeons

By foot step tracking I mean the dog is learning to track your foot steps. 1.Mark a starting point and scuff area good with your feet 2. The walk a straight line (you can do turns when he gets better) 3 As you walk your pattern put a tiny piece of food in each step (as he get better slowly eliminate...

Re: Rabbits and Pigeons

I do not think that would be much a problem, but I would not worry about keeping rabbits around for his VJP...My pup got an "11" on his tracking and never had to do a set-up rabbit. I think it is more important for your dog to learn what the track command means (footstep tracks with hotdog will make...

Some ???? on carding method

Few question for those that card pigeons/ hose method/ yarn weight: After you release the bird and it lands, will it re-flush or do you just pick up the bird? Does the dog get confused by no flush??? I take it this method is for a dog that is already steady....i think if I did this with my pup the p...

DD owners..some ?? 4 you

I have an 11 week DD that does not have any beard(some stuble, but nothing long) at this point. He has some slight hair fringe on legs and ears but not long haired by any means. The breeder seems to think he will get a beard, but I was wondering what other DD owners have experienced. Obviously the b...
