Some folks stop at 7 weeks when they bring them home from the breeder, others continue until a year or longer. It all depends on what you believe about puppy food.

That time of year... maybe down around the south western part of the state will be free of snow. Maybe! Once there's snow on the ground those sharptails become EXTRA nervous! I was just there (In ND) last week and we found / saw 40 to 60 birds a day. But getting within shooting range of them was ano...

They were "Probably" refering to Penn Hip. That process gets accomplished or at least starts within the first 6 months, I think.

I have a friend that lives in Wyoming and apparently Wyoming has quite a few grouse (Ruffs and Blues) also. Not many people hunt them there which means more for you.

To all you Idaho guys,
How are those National Grasslands south of Pocatello for sharptails? I'm heading over to ND soon and thought I'd stop there on my way through to see what they offered.

At one time Springers/Cockers were born from the same litter. The smaller dogs being called Cockers and the larger were called Springers. The smaller dogs were used to hunt (flush) Woodcock (the European version) which live in thick cover. The smaller dogs could get around easier. I believe that's w...

If you teach all the finer points to a spaniel like "Hup" when a bird is flushed, stop to flush and shot, sit when offering up the bird, hand signals then I'm sure they can be every bit as challenging as a pointer. But for a generalist "Meat dog" and I say that with all due respect, when all you wan...

And traditionally most of the dogs that are entered in this type of trial (Cover Trial) are Setters and Pointers. It seems like each type or breed of hunting dog have there own "unofficial" games that they play. Other dogs can enter but...... As an example you don't see many Pointers in AKC trials. ...

There's a huge variety in GWP's depending on the lines, they range from big slower moving dogs that don't get out of gun range to AKC trial competitors. Where as Griffons are more docile generally and don't range to the next county. I saw one that wouldn't go 10 feet from his owner but that could ha...

I've only run in a few trials and 10 or so hunt tests so I have limited experience, but this is my opinion: I think people get confused about trialing and hunting. The two are similiar in their goals (to find and handle birds) but are very different. Hunt tests, and trials are games people play, hun...

I've used them in the 20 - 28 gauge adapter and was very happy with the performance. I was shooting a light weight 20 and after shooting a lot of skeet and doves I started to flinch from the recoil. Now with shooting the 28's in the 20 there's virtually no or a LOT less recoil. Shooting Sportsman ma...

I have found, when you start changing foods you are not very smart. If its not broke, then dont try to FIX IT. I always question when I hear people make general statements like this. There's a growing movement that believes that changing different types of food periodically will give your dog missi...

If you train with your dog on a check cord you can control it and help keep the dog from catching the bird. Always have your dog under some measure of control during training, it might not prevent your dog from catching all the training birds but it will help with a majority of them.

Yes, the Field Spaniel IS it's own breed. There are not very many of them and the breed hasn't suffered the show/field split that some of the other spaniel breeds have experienced. They appear (From what I've read and heard) to be somewhat calmer than the field bred ESS.

Field Spaniels

I believe that most of us on this board are Pointer or Setter owners, but I'm going to inquire anyway. Has anyone ever hunted behind a Field Spaniel? If so what are your thoughts on the breed?

Just to clarify what "pressure" means: When you use physical/electric force to get a desired response. When I was starting out I always wondered what "Pressure" meant. That would be too much pressure for a young pup. Some people wait until a pup is 6 months old, others wait a year and some folks sta...

Instead of "sit" I use "whoa" it doesn't matter to me if their butt is planted or not. Whoa makes them stay, so does sit. For me it's easier to prevent a problem then to fix one.
