Re: 28 gauge on Phez
My wife hunts with a Browning citori feather light, o/u with 24" barrels and its lighter than the Beretta. My Beretta 686 ultralight o/u with 26" barrels is 4.5lbs. Both guns have solid wood stock and forearm. Both you can leave on your shoulder and they will rest there as you walk without keeping a...

Re: 28 gauge on Phez
I do not understand the "small gauge satisfaction" thing, and I have been shooting 28 gauge on quail, woodcock, and dove since the 60's. It is a very capable load, but I shoot 12ga 5's on phez. Not saying others shouldn't hunt with the 28, just I don't think it more sporting or takes a better shot....

Re: Doggie first aid
I hunt mainly south texas so heat stress is main concern. I carry about a gallon of rubbing alcohol. Soak the dog down, since it evaporates so fast it will pull a lot of the heat away from the body and help cool the dog down without shocking it. To treat wounds I use chlorohexidine, which you can bu...

Re: Breed/Breeder Information
She has been spayed. I made that decision when I found out about the demodex. I know that other people bought pups with the intent to breed and most likely are breeding if there are no symptoms which is unfortunate and this is the breeders fault. I sent the breeder an email when I originally started...

Re: Breed/Breeder Information
Well I hope in the next year we don't get any symptoms. A Doctor at U Penn suggested Hydroxychloroqine which is normally prescribed as a treatment for malaria. A dog with LD can live anywhere from 2 to 8 years with it.

Breed/Breeder Information
I bought Jacie, our two year old GSP from a local breeder, Marcheta Huerter with Contrary Creek Kennels when she was 8 wks old. Her dam is Libby, Cheta’s Lady Liberty and her sire is Niko, Ricons Top Choice. Niko comes from FC Dixielands Rusty, as well as Libby who also comes from Rusty’s Blue Earth...

I was feeding Diamond Adult Premium till about a month ago. Since I have been working out of town my girlfriend has been feeding the dogs California Natural, because she doesn't go by TSC.
I am still researching and waiting on a return call from the vet.

Temp is normal. I read online that it could be due to a lack of magnesium.

Shivers shakes
My 2 yr. GSP shivers when she is laying down. Is this at all normal. I know she isn't cold, so just wondering if this could be serious. Everything else is great minus she is a little thin but I know dogs eat less when it is really hot and they get exercised regularly.

Re: Brittany pup wants to flush . . . help!
Couple of lessons I have picked up from my Brittany. Like mine seems she isn't confident with her nose yet, that just takes time but she is picking up the bird's scent. As soon as you think the has scent, stop her and get her to stay put without any pressure on the check cord. You can praise her by ...

Training around Victoria/Port Lavaca, TX?
Looking for land or lease to run and train my two pups. I took a new job that is relocating me to that area. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Question- Eagle Pack dog food
Are you feeding regular Eagle Pack or Eagle Pack Hollistic Select. I started my dogs on Hollistic Select a while ago, they seem to really like it and have had the best stool consistancy and my GSP has less skin issues, but at $50 a bag I am going to start looking around at other options. Above you m...

Re: First Steps on E Collar
Most pups go through a stage where they defy you. Just a few suggestions... never give a command you can't enforce .......forget about the sit command it is counter productive for a pointing dog to learn it......teach your dog to stand still .... The E-collar should be introduced with yard work, IM...

Re: Dog food recommendations
I have used Nutro, Purina Pro Plan (puppy, adult, all life stages), Iams, and Eagle Pack Hollistic Select. Dogs do the best on Eagle Pack, the food is more expensive (i found a feedstore locally that carries it for a good price) but I dropped my 1.5yr 56lb female GSP from almost 8 cups a day to 4-5,...

Re: Possible Staph infection??
My GSP broke out in staph sores on her back when her immune system was down. There is a medicine shampoo you apply every couple of days or you can take antibiotics for it. Antibiotics worked better and was cheaper than the shampoo. The staph sores are not contagious to other dogs or humans. Be sure ...

Re: Demodectic Mange
The kennel I bought my pup from did nothing, even with positive skin scrapes from multiple owners as well. I know of 2 other pups out of the same litter that have had the mites worse than mine. One person had purchased a pup for breeding and finally was able to return the pup for a refund. I have ne...

Re: Building a Dog House
I definitely want it to be as nice as I can make it, but my skill and experience building is limited to small projects (hunting cabins etc). I was taught the "build it right, build it once" ideal, but I have all the materials already laying around so might as well put them to good use instead of let...

Re: Demodectic Mange
I bought my first GSP pup a year ago. I started noticing a few small hairless spots on her at about 4 months but had no idea. Finally around 7 months took her into the vet. The spots really never got any worse, just never got better. Vet diagnosed her right away. She told me that their bodies are gr...

I think the ideal bird hunting gun (dove/quail/grouse) is a side by side 28 or 20 gauge. Sits well on your shoulder, fits nice in your palm giving a good balance. I learned to shoot clays with a 12 gauge Ithaca side by side with 26" barrels, but I am much more accurate and shoot more consistently wi...

Clipping Flight Wings on Quail
I found this: http://www.poultryhelp.com/wingclipping.html Is this the same for quail? Reason I ask is that I just purchased my first GSP pup who is just 8 wks. and I wanted to let her play with a quail this weekend. Also, should I put something at the end of the beak so it can't peck the pup as wel...
