Re: GSP only Partially Retrieves Launched Dummy

What does he do on a retrieve in the house in a hallway?
Start there and build with correct results. Use a leash if needed and reward.
Watch Dr Dale Hubbard youtube videos. It worked with my 8week old llewellin and works for the dr with older age dogs.
Good luck!

Re: Next step in training my 5 and 1/2 month old GSP

Wish you had posted at 8 weeks old. I would have said watch Dr. Dale Hubbard youtube videos. You might still watch. Teach 'place' 1st. Then fetch to place/hand, then hold. Its done with positive treat training. My Llewellin setter is crazy about fetching, blind retrieves, takes hand directions. Its ...

Re: Bird introduced to puppy

How old of a pup is this? Does the pup retrieve dummies already? Anything with a bird needs to be in a very controlled setting....on a bench or short hallway, etc., wearing a lead so you can pull dog to you before he eats bird. Dogs are alittle confused with the feathers the 1st time. Put wings on a...

Treats when dog does right.
Don't let them get in front of your knee.
Be consistent!
Good luck!

Re: Puppy intro to quail - let them catch or no

I put the quail in a 2x4ft pen, 11.25 tall, covered with the rubber netting and let my pup walk on top and chase them.

Bird harnesses. It worked. She did break on a short flying pigeon but pigging string tightened around her waist which she didn't like. I didn't do it to her. I saved her from it :)

Re: Carded quail.....same quick flutter but don't lose the bird

I like those ideas...think I'll use a streamer or cord or survey tape instead.
Fyi...I have a pigeon coop & pigeons that i use all the time. Just need the low weak flyers to get the dog steady. Strong flying pigeons, shes perfect.
Thx for your replies!

Re: Carded quail.....same quick flutter but don't lose the bird

I'm not sure where the quail breeder gets these birds, but these really fly. Beside my field is narrow (7 acres) surrounded by cedars with with wide base limbs(not fun to chase birds out of). Dog doesn't chew(alive birds come back alive). I'll have complete control of the dog. Just trying to reuse t...

Carded quail.....same quick flutter but don't lose the bird

I'm thinking of using carded quail to move on from pigeons. I'll use them using a release so bird will get some help in lift/flush. Carded(cardboard attached w/string) quail will still give the quick flutter & tempting low flight but I can reuse the quail(hopefully if it doesn't have a heart attack ...

Did you ever get with a trainer? How's your dog doing now?
You said you knew where your dog wanted to be when trained, but some dogs are naturals, and others need encouragement to get there. Hope you got dog some training!

Thank you very much. Details are coming together now. I'd like to watch it and other trials someday. I listen to the field trial central youtube vids. Trial system for national bird dog championship

Is the NC at Ames Plantation run by American Field?
Is any trial they post on their website/paper give points for the qualifying?
Do these trials say something like"An American Field Event"?
Just trying to figure it out as I'm not finding any info...Thx!

Re: Steadying a Dog On Wild Birds

Whats the difference between wild birds and a bird in a remote release ...nothing. You definitely don't need to jump to wild birds before being steady to a bird in a release. That's what a remote release is for: to be in control of when bird flushes(act like a wild bird), and to be able to know wher...

Re: A little help with

Why do you have to force anything. Sounds like you're treating the dog like a criminal. Get it? Get them to want to do the right thing. Easier & faster. Teach them 'place' using treats. Then 'fetch', then 'hold'. Once they are in the system, they'll learn fast & you won't need pain. People teach dog...

4 4sec points then move to the left/release bird We'll keep working on it. I usually go the left (walk east, wind coming from south so pup turns right into wind. I'll change it up so I'm on the lh side of pup walking west so I can possibly block the left hand circling manuerver of pup....gotta do so...

DonF, thx for addressing the 'sitting situation '.
Can't wait to get home and work that pup. Wish I had more birds/more reps in a session.

What should I do if dog doesn't move& does everything correctly? How long should should I let pup (1.1yr old is hardly a pup) jold point?

Thx!

Re: Another strange behavior on point

Sorry if I miss someone's message as there is a delay in sending the message and the message actually being posted in the thread. Re: Another strange behavior on point

I don't think she's release shy, definitely not gunshy or tractor shy...rides all the time. Grass is tall so she can't see quail size release. I'm sure I could use pheasant size releases now. She pointed pretty quick today so not going too far into the scent cone. I just think she wants to see the r...

Worked 4 pigeons this evening. She pointed each time for 5secs but moved to the left "inorder to see/other" and I released bird. 4th bird she held for 20sec (a little longer) and then moved to left/I released bird. She didn't chase as we have worked on the barrel 4or 5 times (10birds). Shags, yes sh...

Re: Another strange behavior on point

Its difficult to tell when they're hunting and when they're honing in cause she knows to head into the wind. For a little 32lb setter, she's got a lot of drive/plow. I guess if I have any question about it, release bird. That'll pay off by backing her off bird eventually. Question : why does she sit...

First time trainer, got pup at 7weeks, female pup now 1yr1mth old. Pup points, but sometimes moves to see bird release. I first used pheasant size release and tried to hide but pup may have got used to seeing release at least 50% of the time. Pup creeped, usually around to see release. I probably le...
