Question about JGHV, FF, JGV-USA and steady to WSF

A couple of questions for those familiar with the German testing system: First question: that you know of, do Germans force fetch their dogs most of the time when they get them ready to be tested in the JGHV system (HZP, VGP, etc.) in Germany? I know that the FF method started in Germany (or at leas...

Re: Vive'ing la difference

I'd bet money if you hunt your dog a good bit and remain silent it will start relocating again on its own when it needs to. Mine do. As you mentioned dogs know full well when they are in a hunt test vs hunting wild birds. Kinda goes against the grain of them folks who have dogs that just stay there...

Re: Vive'ing la difference

Spud is an expert at self relocating on running birds. As many times as it takes. If he is holding point he is still in the scent cone of the birds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGqvlwr6UKE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qpNuGYf2fI Yes, more eyes is a major factor in why as family groups of gr...

Orange book

Does anybody know if the following website still works for purchasing "Training The Sporting Dog, 3rd Edition, Smith & Jones, 2016", aka the "Orange Book"? http://www.ahdc.org/ahdcsite/storeitems.php I would like to buy it but the website looks old (or at least that is the impression I get) and I wo...

Re: Question to Minnesotans

I looked in to this a bit more and I found this link: https://mn.gov/elicense/a-z/?id=1083-231149#/list/appId//filterType//filterValue//page/1/sort//order/ This is a MN DNR webpage where one can gather info for an "Application and Special Permit to Train Dogs Afield". There is also a link to the off...

Re: Question to Minnesotans

Well, this is disappointing. I guess I had a different picture of Minnesota in my mind. Don't get me wrong, it still sounds like it is a great state for bird hunting, if you get away from Minneapolis. But as far as being bird dog enthusiast friendly, it sounds like MN is lacking in this aspect. Here...

Question to Minnesotans

Odd question for those who can answer it: I live in Iowa and dog training, testing and hunting is very important to me. I have always lived and hunted in Iowa so I don't have much of a term of comparison, hence why I am asking through this post. I recently received a very good job offer to work in M...

Re: Pigeons homing training

Thank you everyone for the great suggestions. I have been following all of the advice and I am starting with 2-3 birds at a time with distance training. So far so good. From half a mile all have homed well with no losses. We'll keep going with this and hope that I don't lose any.
Thanks

Re: English Pointer breeders in Iowa

Can't go wrong with Bob Konz at Hackberry. Typically offers Elhew and Blackawk lines. Very knowledgeable guy. Spotless kennels. Lots of satisfied customers. I picked up a pup from him last fall and am very happy with it thus far. Thank you ckirsch! I have sent you a PM with a few more questions abo...

Pigeons homing training

Hey everybody, Seeking some advice from some more experienced homing pigeons keepers. I have a small flock of pigeons. I have 6 homers that I bought from a local dog trainer in November 2019 as young birds that had never been flown before. Plus I also have a male regular pigeon (non-homing blood lin...

Re: Training frequency question for green broke pointing dogs

Thank you guys for all the answers. This was really helpful. I am really enjoying the training with my dog, and never realized how cool it is to try to train a dog to a high standard. Personally, I find it more entertaining than hunting itself. I guess when it will all come together (fully trained d...

Training frequency question for green broke pointing dogs

Hello, I have a question regarding training frequency. Aside from conditioning with roading, summer camps on wild birds, etc., how often per week do you train your young green broke pointing dogs? In particular, when working on steadiness (which to me includes, steady to wing and shot, stop to flush...

Hello from Iowa and introduction

Hello, I just would like to introduce myself. My name is Giuseppe (although if you have a hard time pronouncing/typing it, "Joe" does work well too). I leave in Iowa and hunt upland birds almost exclusively. As my name give it away I am originally from Europe, Italy to be more specific. I am 35 and ...
