capercallie hunting
Hello, Usually we hunt grouse around here, and she is working them good at the moment. Lately we have stepped up the game and tried a few trips for capercallie, but they run alot more then grouse do. Do anyone have any experience with training a pup for this kind of hunting, and would like to share?...

Re: Problems with come/here
I think this is very dependant on the dog. Some dogs, if not trained properly to begin with, develops bad habits. The only true success I've had removing bad habits is through aversive training. If your dog knows recall, it is time to expect the dog to come to you when the command is given. If the d...

Re: Strange behaviour on point
As I promised earlier i would go to a trainer during the summer. We went there for the weekend to get a few tips and tricks and worked up some pidgeons on his fields. The dog was working perfectly on the pidgeons and the work was enough for the best top positions in any test around here. So to speak...

Re: Strange behaviour on point
The birds are now nesting and the training season is pretty much over. In summary, this training season ended with a very good product of a dog, which is starting to find its way. The points are stable, flushing is good, and calm while the birds fly away. In august we will start training again, now ...

Re: Strange behaviour on point
Another problem is the false points that has emerged, where she points the spot the birds newly flew away from. Is this something which is rectible? False points ….strictly speaking these are points on nothing at all or on , perhaps, ancient scents not necessarily of game. . They can be caused by h...

Re: Strange behaviour on point
Had another go and a few situations. She hasn’t come back to me ever since. And things are getting better in that departement. However, she points rather far away from the birds, we were advancing about 100 m before the birds flushed today. Another problem is the false points that has emerged, where...

Re: Strange behaviour on point
For a few videos from my last trips, where to upload? I ended up calling the breeder, and he adviced me to keep distance, as the dog probably felt pressure from me coming up behind her. Keeping my distance also fixed the Flushing issues, which is a requirement on the tests around here. We’re not don...

Re: Strange behaviour on point
I appreciate all the input from everybody. Where I live getting training birds is difficult, mainly because you need to apply to the government for it, and they just don't hand out licence to everybody. Getting on wild birds is no big deal around here, as they are plentiful, and usually I get 2-5 go...

Re: Strange behaviour on point
I've had the pup since this 8 weeks, and she have been with me on all my fishing trips and walks. Wild birds is pretty much all I have avaiable, since penned birds are far apart where I live. I've followed the program given by the breeder, and we've worked through house rules, basic obedience and re...

Re: Strange behaviour on point
Well yes, unfortunately real game is the only birds available for me at this moment, unfortunately there is some kind of crisis going on in the world right now. Yes she is taking walks with me, and I do encourage her all the way, it's pretty much all I do, as her obedience is far greater than I ever...

Strange behaviour on point
So I got this new french brittany pup, which is now 8 months old. We've been out regularly since she got into my hands, and has started to point the few birds we have stumbled upon lately. When on point mostly one of two things happen, either way she stops pointing and either sneak into the bird, or...

Re: Setter tracking birds
Veggie, over in my WSF thread I posted an outline of how I go about teaching my dogs steadiness in response to a question about it. The methods I am using have been used to train untold thousands of dogs including many AFC/FC dogs by the man I learned them from. There is no question as to their eff...

Also remember it is almost half a year since this process started out. Today was a more productive day with an actual huntable situation f...

Re: Setter tracking birds
Some of the confusion comes from the fact that most of the advice on here is from people who live by the e-collar and you cannot use one. I have never used them and do just fine. This whole chasing business is a matter of lack of basic obedience, something that needed to be on its way to being sort...

Re: Setter tracking birds
Youare correct, training isn't easy. If it was, we'd all be in the business and have wonder dogs :D OK, so now you know that "let the birds train the dog" does not work for your dog. So you can eliminate that method from the suggestions you have received. If I remember correctly, the use of an e-co...

especially as I see no improvements whatever I do. Some tell me the dog will get it at some point, just keep giving him experience, but starting to feel unsure about the whole thing. Maybe you can tell us whatever it is you are doing/have done. From what you've written, it sounds to me like you tak...

Really nice to hear back from someone on how things went. We don't get that often here. Thanks. :) Well yes, persistent as I am I keep bringing him outdoors on wild birds. Re: Setter tracking birds
I remember you said you could have the opportunity to work with a trainer. Did that happen? Have you done any actual training, or are you simply allowing the dog to run amok? It sounds like, in the dog's mind, he *is* having success in doing what he wants - flush and chase. It's up to you to commun...

Re: Setter tracking birds
It has been a while since my last post. The dog has now turned 2 years old and we are closing in on the end of the season up here. Re: Setter tracking birds
The amount of game exposure needed to persuade a pup to point varies a lot from dog to dog. I've had a couple of pups that began to point after as few as 6 -10 birds had been found and chased. With that sort of pup they have very quickly come to realise that they cannot and will not catch a flying ...

Re: Setter tracking birds
Whoa, that's a lot of money! My trainer gets 1/8 of that per month. Go with the hourly a few times if you can. Ask for a proper introduction to birds, and see if the trainer can run the dog on a few birds to see if he will find/point. The trainer, if it's an honest one, will tell you which directio...

OP, thank you for clarifying your situation. You mention that pros suggest you let them work your dog, but that you don't want to pay for something you think perhaps you can do yourself. IMO paying someone might be the most economical way to go. Pros have the grounds, the equipment, the birds, and ...

Re: Setter tracking birds
Veggie mentioned that he has a setter, I believe. The livestock chasing is being addressed as far as I can tell. The e-collar will do it's job in the right hands. The environment and type of stock must also change, as already mentioned. Dogs, by nature, are terrible generalists but very fine discri...

Sorry to hear about your dog's continued strong interest in sheep. I.M.O. the e-collar treatment should have been done over several days in several...

This dog has been trouble since the day he entered our house now, and I feel I'm at a wits' end with this. If I can't get him to hunt properly and experience some joy with him I'm through with him. I am also fully aware of the risks by introducing the e-collar in such situations, and I've ensured th...

snip Good luck going forward. Thank you for good wishes. The e-collar was deemed successful by the trainer, as he was afraid of the sheeps inside the pen. Now there is only the raindeer left and we're all good to go, at least without him being shot by some farmer. As mentioned earlier I think there...
