I have heard the same thing about wetting the nose, maybe and maybe not. Down in the desert it's hot and dry, scent doesn't carry as well. Also the dog's probably get hot a lot easier, hydrate the dog. A hot dog does most its breathing thru it's mouth. To scent game it needs to breath thru it's nose.

Ya got nailed on those wings pertty quick and rightfully so, toss'em. Good time to build a loft and stock it. Doesn't need to be real big, about one square foot per bird. They can be built with scrap material too. Where are you in Eastern Washington?

You guy's trying to trap pigeon's, you need to get the birds coming and going in the trap first you know? Not a lot different than teaching them to pushthe bob's open to get back into the loft. Probably was on the up wind side. The dog has already shown he'll point birds. First time on quail he might have bumped them if he'd smelled them but I doubt he'd have passed them. On the up wind side they can pass awful close and not smell them. Keep running him.

I trained several Burnt Creek dogs from Jet Train. Some of the easiest and best dogs I ever worked with. I think Burnt Creek Press is still around. I googled either Jim Marti or Burnt Creek Kennels or something like that a couple years ago. Jim was around but no mention of the Kennels.

Straight stock's were actually designed for double trigger guns. When you go for the second trigger the hand slides back a bit. They do look good and feel good tho so they are put on other guns. Trap them. They will home from a lot farther than 20 mi. I have been using feral pigeons for well over twenty years and have had some that have homed from close to 100mi. What you want to do is set it up so the dog doesn't anticipate the launch but rather thinks it's movement caused it. Did you shoot any pigeons for him? No reason to believe he'll to be steady on preserve birds if he's not on pigeons. You have discovered the beauty of pigeons over game farm irds, pigeons don't run around on the ground!

You do say one thing about how you trained her, you talk to her to much. Get a release trap and and don allow her to establish point a few time's. Then once she does, that tail moves, pop the bird right away.

There is no better bird for training a pointing dog than a pigeon. Put in a loft with about ten birds and your set. Doesn't need to be big.
