I tried either the French or English method in Alaska years ago. With one you remove the innards and hand the bird by its feet for 5 days at 50 degrees, I think that was the temp. The other you hang the bird by the neck with the innards in till the head seperates from the body. I did the guts out wa...

Pointing dogs are smarter than retrievers. They understand that when they fetch an object they are to hold it in their mouth properly and finish the retrieve before starting the next retrieve. I used to tell Otis fecth for each bird that was down when I sent him for the first bird. That way with thr...

I just think that doing it without hold confusses the dog. I see fetch as the command to pick up the object. I also go past the normal FF and go on with FTP because i train labs. I don't know who forced her but I'd get her back there in a hurry, put her back on the table and refresh her memory. You keep shooting birds and at this point she'll probably keep munching. Get her on the table and lean on her.

I agree with everyone else but would suggest one thing different. Leave the shotgun home and blank birds or if you simply must take the shotgun, miss on purpose. The dog will probably have bird handling issues in the begining anyway and leaving the gun home means you can't get excited and shoot a mi...

Not a problem. Take the knot out of the end of the cord and let him drag it. Then don't try to call him unless you have the cord. Let him bump and run all the birds he wants. As your letting him run, keep turning yourself to keep him in front of you.

Finding 16 ga here is a chore. I recommend that you reload them. Then you'll only have trouble finding wads! I like 1oz loads of #6 shot.
Reloading can be done chea,,,,inexpensively. Lee Load All in 16 ga is under $50. I've used it in 12 ga and 20 ga. Makes good hunting loads.

That view makes sense to me. The dog should stay to the front but should go to likely cover. Actually I've never heard it called a 10/2 pocket before. If you manage to keep a dog there all the time, you probably have an overtrained and mechanical dog. They don't win a lot!

I have never pulled the flight feathers on a game bird so don't know how well that works. But if you had some pigeons with the flight feathers pulled, I'd start there. I would want my springer to catch a lot of birds on the ground. What happens if they don't is that they can become soft on the flush...

JR, when she drops the bird, don't pick it up, kick it away. If she doesn't bring it to you in a couple of tries, end the session and start over tomorrow. Another thing to do is to step back one step and go down on one knee. Often it will draw the dog to you with the bird in mouth. Time it so you go...
