Re: Recommendations for a Semi-automatic shotgun
I’ll second those that say buy what fits. I’ve got a citori grade 3 with an English stock that I love the looks and contour of but the way I shoot it is an embarrassment. I’ve got a franchi AL48 that cost a third of what the browning did and I’m lights out with it. I don’t imply that cheaper is just...

Re: What type of shotgun are you using for your bird hunts?
Franchi AL-48 in 28 gauge. She’s got a 28” barrel and a Carlson extended skeet tube. This gun fits me better than anything I’ve ever owned. I’ve had some great hunts with it.

Re: Young Dog/Old Dog/New to Training
Well I have no regrets thus far. The pros outweigh the cons. I’ve hunted them together 3 times now and the old adage rings true that nothing trains a dog like birds. The first hunt the only promise my pup showed was honoring the older dog. Second hunt she did a lot of the same but picked up some poi...

Re: Young Dog/Old Dog/New to Training
Well...I pulled the trigger and brought the older dog home. Before I’d agree to take him I told the owner I wanted to see him hunt/work and check his temperament with my pup. We met yesterday morning at a quail preserve and put some birds out to work the dogs on. Now understand that my GSP is only 9...

Re: Young Dog/Old Dog/New to Training
No issues that the owner is aware of regarding hips and knees. He's just starting to slow down compared to the rest of the group of 4-5 dogs that are being hunted at least 4 days a week. I've had that exact discussion with the wife. While he would have 2-3 good years left of light to moderate huntin...

Re: Young Dog/Old Dog/New to Training
Thanks for the responses thus far. I in no way meant to imply that I believed a veteran dog would put my pups training plan on cruise control. My perception is that it could prove beneficial in allowing my pup to see some good behaviors and allow her to socialize and work with another dog in the fie...

Young Dog/Old Dog/New to Training
I’ll try to keep this as close to cliff notes as possible but here goes. I decide last fall to finally get a bird dog. Once upon a time my dad hunted behind my grandfathers dogs that were top notch and I heard many stories from them and locals about how good my grandfathers dogs were and the hunts t...

Ithaca 100 SxS 20 gage info needed
What are you guys seeing for the going rate on an Ithaca model 100 20 gage SxS with 28 inch barrels? It’s choked mod and full so I’d have to have it opened up for quail. Wood conditionshows some knicks from hunting. Bluing is excellent. Lockup is tight. Gun fits and swings well. Guy is wanting $900 ...

Re: Crate VS X-Pen
We were pretty happy that we had that success on her third night at home.
Right now there is a 6 year old boy and a 7 year old girl trying to find out how far her batteries can go. I'm betting she sleeps well again tonight

Re: Crate VS X-Pen
Thanks for the insight Timewise. She had a really good night last night and this morning with no accidents and little whining. I think we may be on our way to covering some ground in crate training.

Re: Crate VS X-Pen
Good point Greg. I was already figuring on that being her initial escape plan. Luckily her current crate is short enough she can’t make that jump with the crate in the middle of the pen but she’ll outgrow the puppy mindset quick and find a way I’m sure. My hope is to condition her to better crate be...

Re: Crate VS X-Pen
Thanks CJ. I agree that our situation is not ideal but I want to do what is right by the dog. I appreciate the input.

Re: Crate VS X-Pen
You are correct in that the X pen would be indoors. It is 42" high and I think she's got a few months before she figures out how to clear that. I hate that she has to spend that much time alone but it is the nature of our jobs right now. I feel like allowing her to play with some safe toys (Kong and...

Crate VS X-Pen
Santa was kind enough to bless our family with an 8 week old GSP. We've been having some moderate success with potty training as long we pay close attention to her and frequently take her out. The kids (ages 6 and 7) are doing well at taking on the new responsibility of letting her out and giving he...
