Re: New to training
I can relate to all your problems. I believe if you stick with the discipline the dog can calm down. I am not an expert but my Brittany was pretty difficult to live with in the home until about a year and a half. He is almost two now and if he isn't running outside, prefers to lay on his bed and sle...

Purina Proplan sport 30/20 vs 26/16
Any reason to use the one with less protein and fat? Ive always fed 30/20, didn't know 26/16 existed.

Re: recall to whistle versus e-collar tone recall
If taught correctly dog will respond to the tone, come, or the whistle. But, as someone mentioned above, in the future you may not want the dog to return all the way with the whistle, just more of a check in. I would make the dog come in all the way on the whistle in the beginning.

Re: Place Command
Place is a word, nothing more! To your dog it's a word it will not understand till you teach it. It could be swapped out with several other commands and work! For instance, whoa. It means stop and stand still, nothing more. Sit mean's sit and don't move until released, nothing more. Down means lie ...

Re: Place Command
I only own one dog, I am no expert. Many pointer people will tell you place is not necessary, and in my opinion they are correct. But, I have taught my Brittany place. This may help you with a few of your questions. How does teaching place to a dog's bed/mat teach the dog to go somewhere you want it...

Re: Gunner Medium
I was interested in the Gunner small, I have a 30lb britt and I had this same question. I wanted to save some room in the back of my suburban and wanted a smaller kennel. I got the gunner small dimensions and realized is about the size of small wire kennel I used when he was a puppy. I set the wire ...

Re: Gunner or Ruff Tuff
If you go to the gunner website they are hitting kennels with a sled and the gunner does much better then the ruff tough and the other kennels. Its a stronger kennel. I believe if you go to the ruff tough website, they are doing something similar, but the gunner kennel isn't part of the test. That d...

Re: Reinforcing obedience with E collar
Once the dog complies with the command stop the stimulation. I am a novice but this has helped me, put the e collar on the dog every time you go outside with the dog. Never call him to you if he doesn't have the collar on him, you have to correct him every time he doesn't comply. Even if all it take...

Re: Reinforcing obedience with E collar
George Hickox Great Beginnings and Training Pointing Dogs has a good introduction. First command is Kennel, it teaches the dog to shut the stimulation off by going in the kennel after you have given the command.

Re: Deer Question
What level of intensity do you normally train with? In the yard he will often respond to a 1, maybe go up to a 3. If I am heeling him and he comes by another dog, he might need a 4. But, he was bad at chasing tweety birds, flushed pheasants, and training pigeons. When they flew he would chase them a...

Re: Deer Question
I have a 15 month old Brittanny. He is collar conditioned. He ran some deer about a month ago out of a preserve, crossed a busy road, and ran about a mile or so before I could find him. First time he has done this. We didnt realize he was running deer at first. Question, when I trashbreak him should...

Re: Why Purina Pro Plan?
The kennel I got my pup from fed proplan sport salmon and rice, the breeder was a vet, ran competition dogs, said he had studied dog food extensivly, and used it on dogs in his kennel as well as at the vet.

Re: Pulling Pup
I have a related question with a one year old Brittany pup who I have trained to heal with an e collar. It’s pretty solid unless there is a lot of distraction. I don’t expect the dog to heal the entire walk. I don’t mind if when the dog is not on heal if he walks in front of me. But he will pull occ...
