Re: Food for Dog with Allergy
Thanks for the advice shags. My wife took him to the vet yesterday and it doesn’t sound like any tests were done other than a visual examination of the ear. It happened when he was about a year old, gave him drops and it went away until a couple months ago when it got bad again. They gave him drops ...

Food for Dog with Allergy
My Boykin gets ear infections and the vet said it could be an allergy, and recommended we try changing foods. Currently using Victor Hi-Energy and used to use Purina Pro Plan, he has had ear issues while on both. Any recommendations?

Re: Pickiness with dummies
Thanks for all the replies everyone. Once I got identical dummies, everything started going much smoother and now he will mark triples pretty reliably. As far as casting goes, I can work him into the area of the fallen bird and as long as I’m getting my birds back, I’m happy.

Re: Pickiness with dummies
Ended up just buying half a dozen identical dummies once my last paycheck hit. Problem seems to be fixed for the most part. Occasionally he’ll decide that he doesn’t want to pick up one of the subsequent ones but we can usually work through it that session and if he decides that he really doesn’t w...

Re: Pickiness with dummies
Does it really matter ? The dog is only doing what most dogs would do. For instance if I put out a canvas dummy and a rabbit skin dummy it is very probable that my dogs would choose the rabbit skin dummy if the dogs were just being "sent to a pile." But if I put a dummy out to left and to right and...

Re: Pickiness with dummies
He is collar conditioned. But I’ve really only ever used the collar to enforce “come” and “sit” when he’s out of reach. This isn’t a major issue to me as it doesn’t cause much issue when we’re actually hunting, just one small training glitch I’d like to solve if possible. With him being a Spaniel, h...

Pickiness with dummies
I have a 2 year old Boykin who is a decent retriever and flusher, but now I’m starting to really work on tuning him up to be where I want him to be. For the most part things are going well, but he’s picky over which dummies he likes. He has not been force fetched, but will retrieve any dummy thrown....

Re: Woodcock help PLEASE
I live in east NC and also have a Boykin. In the mornings I notice woodcock seem to be in slightly more open areas; pine savannah and some old growth forest. Always in/near swamps though. In the afternoons I always find them in much more densely wooded areas, the kinda places that make getting shots...

In my vest I keep my shells and the remote to the dogs collar, plus the training whistle. Water and any other essentials go in a backpack, but if I don’t need a lot of gear, a fanny pack does well

Re: Stormy almost ran by this one!
Our Boykin will do that occasionally. If he can smell a bird from a little ways off he’ll run right in and flush it, but if he sees it first or catches it’s scent on a breeze as he’s running by he’ll stop, stare and go into a quick point in whatever position he’s in, as if it just surprised and conf...

I just flip up the middle seat in my truck and he rides between me and my wife, usually just lays down and goes to sleep unless he knows we’re going hunting

Re: pup biting
Our Boykin turns a year old in a few weeks, and he also ripped up some carpet last month. Nothing stops him from chewing either, except Tabasco sauce on whatever he’s wanting to chew. But he’s smart and doesn’t mind it once it’s dried. I will say though he’s come along way. Yes as a hunting dog, but...

Re: What are you paying?
I was feeding Pro Plan puppy until late fall, then switched to Pro Plan Sport. Believe both costed around $45 for a large bag. He really didn’t like the Sport though, I’ve never seen him eat anything so begrudgingly lol. Once the bag was gone I bought Beneful which I believe was around $30 for a sim...

My last dog was not a hunting dog, but the no-kill-shelter he came from required him to be neutered before one year of age, I wanna say he was about 7 months when he got it done. He had multiple health issues and died at the age of 7. I can’t say for sure, but after reading some things recently it w...

Re: Introducing older pup to water
If he has a high enough drive to retrieve, that alone will get him in the water. This summer I tried many times getting our pup into small creeks, ponds, and even a kiddie pool I put in the back yard for him. He was none too thrilled. But when it was time to hunt, he’d RUN into the water for a bird ...

Re: Classic SxS or O/U
I don't own either, and I haven't shot either exentensively. But from what I have shot I like SxS with a 28" barrel and double triggers. Perhaps that gun just fit me the best, an older man at the range let me try out a few of his SxS guns because I had never shot one before.

Re: Paying Attention
I think you were expecting too much from a pup .....the younger the pup the less it's attention span will be. It would take more than one bird shot during an entire morning to encourage a pup to give the skies and fields it's attention. I had pretty low expectations, this was just one concern I had...

Paying Attention
Took my Boykin Spaniel pup for his first hunt, but the doves were flying high after 3 days of heavy pressure in this particular field, but I managed to bag one late in the morning. That's when I noticed my dog wasnt paying any attention, he was trying to chew on leaves and sniff everything. I'm sure...

Re: What gun dogs do you have and why?
I have a 4 month old Boykin Spaniel. I really wanted a lab or wirehair pointer, but our duplex only allows dogs under 35lbs. He's (hopefully) gonna be my little duck dog, and will end up just the right size for my little Jon Boat. Might try to work on flushing later on but I'm more concerned with re...

Mossberg 500 12ga for waterfowl and small game. H+R Excell Auto 12ga for just about everything else that flies. I just bought my first 20ga, mostly for my wife, and plan to try it for doves and quail this year.

I like my Mossberg 500. Never jammed and it's easy to find barrels and/or chokes for. Main reason I take it waterfowling though is it's a cheap and rugged gun that I don't have to worry about ruining

Re: Refusing to pick up bumpers
I have a Boykin pup who is 3 1/2 months now. Often times if he won't pick up a bumper, I'll take him inside and wait till the next day, he'll usually go back to doing fine. I don't use this time for training anything serious yet, but I don't want him to be bored with it and get the idea he can refus...

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting in the forum. I have a 13 week old Boykin Spaniel and this is my first hunting dog and therefore also my first time training one. Morning all, I'm 20, married for 7 months, in the Marine Corps stationed in Cherry Point NC. My wife and I are both from WV originally. I mostly deer hunt, I just started waterfowl hunting a few years ago and have only been about 10times, this year will be my first time going after ducks alone. This...
