Re: Big runners and heavy cover
OK now I am getting somewhere. RayG used the term bending, did a google and came up with an article similar to what Sharon is describing using the CC No book Ive ever read. ve read, (even those highly recommended) cover this topic. When ever Ive read on this subject its treated as something that the...

Re: Big runners and heavy cover
All very well. I admitted a flaw in my traiining and am asking for specific training steps that may be effective in keeping the dog within an acceptable range. I would greatly appreciate if knowledgeable persons would elaborate on their training methods,as specific as possible. Overall my grif does ...

Re: Big runners and heavy cover
It takes training for the dog to learn to stay within "YOUR' comfort zone. I train all my dogs to "hunt close" and will use that command to keep them in. Over time and repetition, the dog will anticipate and "self adjust", not because it wants to, but because it knows that there will be a command a...

Re: Big runners and heavy cover
As much as I hate using a bell on the collar it does signal where dog is and when dog stops to point. Not a perfect solution but overall I think its an advantage.

Thanks for all the responses. The mendota skidplate looks to be a popular choice and I will give this strong consideration

Re: Dogs vest for grouse hunting
second (or third) the skid plate. Too many sharp sticks and rocks in the woods to shorten your dog's hunting season. Fits well, protects dog, plenty of ventilation, good visibility, and durable as heck. My only complaint is that the color fades a lot in a year's time. Robbw and NEHomer So even with...

Re: Dogs vest for grouse hunting
purpose of the vest is visibility. In 2 seasons of hunting she hasnt needed a skid plate yet. And the vest has to function on the dogs body without getting twisted around and 2) keeping her body cool and comfortable. Some sturdy looking vests such as Hurtta and Sylmer that provide too much coverage ...

Dogs vest for grouse hunting
Anyone have experience using this vest https://www.lcsupply.com/Ten-Mile-Cloth-Dog-Safety-Vest/productinfo/TMCDSV/ I know there are several good vests out there and many that may not work for my needs. My dog runs hot even when its darn cold so ventilation is necessary especially in the early half o...

Re: feeding pigeons
I dont see much need to be fussy. What do these birds eat in the wild?? Corn sorguhm corn and more corn. Where do they get their water in winter when everything is frozen? I doubt they get any water. Life is hard and they do just fine. As a kid growing up in wisconsin on our farm there did not seem ...

Re: Woodcock Migration 2017
Lot of wind and snow in north wisconsin past weekend. Cant imagine why a woodcock would stay around for that if it had the option of migrating south. I hunted Iron county yesterday (monday) and did flush one WC (strong flyer) in a high ground forest. Dog ran right past it, never pointed. And thats t...

Re: How do know when it’s time ?
You don't want to come home from work, or wake in the morning, to find him lying dead in his own excrement, or to find him laying in it struggling and unable to get up. Worse, to perhaps have you and your wife resent each other for such a nasty final predicament. I have to fully agree with Shags on...

Re: How do know when it’s time ?
Its a hard choice no doubt. My last dog lived to be 17 and many times i was tempted to buy the pill. Like your dog, incontinent and acting goofy/ But my dog seemed happy enough, ran around enough that i could see she wanted to keep living IMO. Nothing wrong with the dog living outside is there? You ...

Re: Woodcock Migration 2017
Youre right BF115, not directly IN the water but in moist areas, even in farm fields Ive found them. Iff your dog is young like mine it may take some time for dog to que into their smell. WC must have a lighter odor as some have agreed with me that the dog doesnt detect them as readily as other bird...

Re: Woodcock Migration 2017
they only migrate at night
Ive always been curious but never found the answer.....how do they detect where its favorable to land in the dark. I can only guess that they must have one heck of a nose to detect the difference between favorable and unfavorable areas.????

Re: Woodcock Migration 2017
I hunted northern Wisc last week and appears the migration is happening since I seen weak, tired flyers some in groups. Other than those attributes I dont know how to tell a migrator from a local. Look for swampy ground with brush and small trees, creek/river bottoms which much of the northern 1/3 o...

Of course, the nice thing about over-pants is that when you head into town for some grub, you peel them and still look presentable.....well almost. :? you must not be hunting in the right area. If we head into bar or cafe we dont fit in unless we look like weve been hunting or working. So having mu...

Re: Which Training supplies?
I am likely in the minority but I build my own leashes using the best brass clips I can find and buy bulk rope (orange) from the farm store. I make them into any length I want. Generally 6-10 ft for walking lead and 25 ft for check cord. New pups seem to chew and destroy most everything and the leas...

Well, they dont make or sell Mcalister pants anymore. Not much on the market for waxed pants except filson and $200 for filson is probably not going to fly out of my wallet anytime soon. The chaps certainly have their niche but not at keeping pants dry when wading. The otterwax and nik wax look very...

I love my carharrts for busting through thorny brush but I hate that they gain 10 pounds as soon as I wade through the swamp or cross a creek. And yes I must get wet to get anywhere when I grouse hunt. So what are some better pant options so I dont have to lug around a extra 10 pounds of water all d...

Teaching Pointing
Hi, I am new to the forum and this is my first post. I have a smart Griffon that overall is doing well and progressing, nearing 18 months age. She appears to be weakness in pointing instinct. She will point occasionally but she prefers to creep and chase so I am using the Mo Lindley method with pron...
