Re: Training to back and silhouette

I trained a dog for the Invitational years back using a silhouette. Drew out a GSP on a sheet of 1/8 plywood, put handles on both sides so that it could be propped facing either direction. Cut it out and painted one side roan and the other white with liver spots. Employed the services of my nine-ye...

Does anyone know if anyone sells just a silhouette to aid in training to back? My drawing skills are not great but I want to try this with my dog and see if I can get her to understand the idea.

For you guys who limit or skip feeding on the morning of a hunt, do you do this with all ages? Or do you wait until a dog is more physically mature before you do this? If you were to be hunting your dog tomorrow how and when do you feed? Do you feed a little heavy the night before? Do you feed normal the night before and light the morning of the hunt? Do you carry an energy pick up for the dog and if so what do you use? Just trying to get an idea of what others do...

Re: Bird launchers

From my observations the remote launchers can be activated as soon as the dog scents. I believe this is good because soon the dog will catch the scent point and wait for a bird to appear as that is what they have been taught would happen. If I have to walk up to the bird and do a manual release with...

Good idea
I would not mind spending more but with 1 dog and limited time I do not see me wearing one out thus I was opting for the less expensive version assuming the others were intended to be used a lot more and would hold up better. I may go the manual route and try it

Re: Slowing down the dog

My Brittany will hold until I release her. She has retrieved a wounded bird to me before but unless I shoot she does not get released and the command is fetch dead. If I miss or she flushes I say No Bird which is her queen to ignore the airborne bird and continue to hunt.

Re: Slowing down the dog

AG

She is holding now and has backed off a couple of feet. Getting on wild birds has helped that. I was just concerned about her speed. After all of the post I have read here I believe she is fine. More exposure is likely the best answer. I don’t scold her for any bird she finds or flushes.

Dog boots/leg protection

I know boots come off etc but in the southwest with cactus I need to give it a try as my dog will have to go to the vet Monday to get a thorn that broke off below the skin removed. It is higher up on the leg so boots alone probably would not help. What have you used that did and did not work.

I have a Brittany that is about 14 months old. I plant quail for her and she finds them fairly reliably. Consider adding a pre-biotic to pup's food. A rule of thumb for excercise from my old my old vet: 5 minutes of running or vigorous exercise per month of age- i.e. 6mo pup gets 30min. Good luck. 4-7 miles 2-3 times a week for a six-month old pups seems excessive.
