Re: Dog points, but won't point pheasants
Would it help if I put pheasant scent on a pigeon?

Dog points, but won't point pheasants
I need some help with my 4.5-year-old Vizsla/Brittany mix. We’ve primarily hunted waterfowl for the past four seasons, but I decided that this year we will focus on upland. He’s never pointed pheasants, but he has quail. This spring I started working him on pigeons and he’s been a Rockstar. He slams...

Re: Franchi Affinity vs. Browning Silver Hunter 20 GA
Thanks for the input. At this point, it will probably be which ever gives me a deal first.

Franchi Affinity vs. Browning Silver Hunter 20 GA
It's me again (aka the most indecisive gun buyer on this forum). I am looking for suggestions and input on the Franchi Affinity and Browning Silver in a 20 gauge. They are the two autoloaders that fit me best and I read good things about both. I will use it primarily for sharptail, chukar, and jump ...

Re: Hiccup in force-fetch
I could capture a good video, but I can describe it. He just clams up. He won't open his mouth and I have to force it in. He looks down and appears generally dejected. I try to keep the pressure to the lowest amount possible. Is he just a soft dog?

Re: Hiccup in force-fetch
I give him praise when he does it right, but no treats. He isn't very food motivated. He retrieves pretty well, but won't reliably retrieve birds that fall on the far bank of moving water (he's fine if they are in the water or dry land, but if they land on the opposite bank, he swims over sniffs it,...

Hiccup in force-fetch
Everyone: I decided to give it a go again and I am force-fetching my 2-year-old Vizsla/Brittany mix. He is doing well with hold and will follow me around with the paint roller just fine. I started the ear pinch a week and a half ago and at first he was doing great, but lately seems to be shutting do...

Re: Ruger 28 Gauge
I might be misinterpreting fit for feel. All I know is that when I shoulder it, the bead is where is should be and I don't have to move my head around to point it...but it is too heavy for the gauge. It's a bit of a moot point right now though. Household projects just delayed any new gun buying.

Re: Is he ready for force fetch?
So I feel a bit silly, but I found "Smart Fetch" online for $19.99. At first, I thought that I had to buy the complete $350 package and that just wasn't going to happen. Anyway, I ordered a copy and it should be here soon. I put him back on the table tonight. Last time, he would get stressed and sta...

Is he ready for force fetch?
I have a Vizsla/Brittany mix (3/4 V and ¼ Brittany) that turned 2 in January. We didn’t get out much his first season, but we made it out about 20 times this year (I’m lucky enough to live 13 minutes from public land). I got him to fetch by throwing a bumper in the garage, but as a novice I didn’t d...

Re: Ruger 28 Gauge
Thanks for the advice. Like all of us, I have more ideas and wants than money. We'll see what I can't find in the pawn shops and on Gunbroker between now and August 30.

Re: Ruger 28 Gauge
The only reason I would consider the 28 gauge is the Red Label itself. I've handled as many O/U as I can find over the last 1.5 years and the two that fit me best are the Red Label and the Stevens 555 (better than the Beretta and Browning). After reading the reviews on the Stevens, I don't want to r...

Ruger 28 Gauge
As some of you know, I am in the market for a new upland shotgun. Originally, I wanted a 20 gauge and after handling several guns, the Ruger Red Label 20 gauge ended up on top of my list for fit and feel. However, my main issue with it is the weight (7 plus pounds for a 20 gauge). That got me readin...

Re: Help selecting a 20 GA O/U
Thanks for the input. I looked at the Stevens 555 and frankly, it fit me better than any other shotgun I've handled. However, the reviews all seem to say that there is a substantial chance of a double-firing gun and they only have a one year warranty, with the buyer paying shipping. I've also looked...

Help selecting a 20 GA O/U
I am looking for a little help and direction re: a 20 gauge over/under. I have decided that I would like to get a 20 gauge over/under for upland hunting, but I don’t have enough first-hand information to decide which model. My price range is up to about $1,000 with $1,200 being doable if the stars a...

Idahoan looking for versatile breed for cold weather ducks
I am looking for breed and breeder suggestions for a versatile dog that would excel at cold weather waterfowl. December and January are routinely below zero in the mornings and I would like a dog that can handle it while wearing a vest and sitting in a blind. Re: overheating-I'll sacrifice some earl...

Re: Dog won't force-fetch
I decided to take a break and try some other methods. I'll use positive methods throughout the hunting season and if he's not delivering to hand by January, I'll either get a professional or try the ear pinch/Gibbons West method.

Re: Dog won't force-fetch
Sorry for the late response. I have been out of town and working late. I know that a professional would do a much better job, but I am limited on finances and I want to train my own dog. I took a look at the timing issue and I don't think that is it. Since I lasted posted he has started to reach and...

Dog won't force-fetch
First, I am new to bird hunting, dog training, and this board. I have a 20-month-old Vizsla/Brittany mix. He has one season under his belt where he pointed a few quail and retrieved some ducks. He is pretty good about going out and getting the bird, but he drops it about 5 feet in front of me (a res...
