Re: Pro 550+
I've used the 550+ for a couple of days now, and coming off the 550, it's definitely an improvement in the areas I needed. The location interface is superbly simple for hunting applications, and the little solid black stop sign indicates when the dog is on point. Perfect. That all I need.

I have had the same Filson Tin cloth apparel for 3 dogs and over 30 years, It's like wearing waterproof armor in the woods, and gets more comfortable with every use. Yes, it's expensive, but the cost amortizes to peanuts over its useful life.

I'm heading out to croak a deer now! I've spent all my time hunting with Mauser, and I need to get some venison in the freezer.
I have 550 acres, and no trespassers anymore, but Mauser still sports his Cabela's Ripstop vest along with his New England bell.

Re: What type of shotgun are you using for your bird hunts?
I'm a right-handed person who shoots lefty due to my eye dominance being left. For ruffed grouse and other upland birds, I regularly use my Ithaca M37 Featherlight in 16ga. I received it as a birthday gift when I turned 13 - 41years ago! It's a look and shoot gun for me. However, I like to mix it up...

Mauser locates a ruffed grouse in tough conditions, and I trim some beech whips and scare it good. He's not bad for 14 months of age! These birds on my property have been pointed, flushed, and shot at all season too, so there's a learning curve for both bird and dog. I give a big shout out to Brad H...

I use a New England Bell #4 bell. It has a lower tone and carries nicely in the thick stuff. It's not too loud though. They offer larger and smaller ones.

Thanks. Like the quail, I fly them out and let them meander around for a while, to simulate natural bird activity. Sometimes for over an hour. I've been using a launcher and Higgins release with Mauser for months. He's pretty staunch for a pup.

Yes, and I fly them out of the pen. They explode and fly several hundred yards in every direction. Then they apparently write a suicide note and bury themselves.

I switched from quail to chukar for Mauser's continued training. It hasn't been going well. They're not running or flushing (well...one did), but instead hiding in place, apparently preparing to die. With a 13-month old pup, this is not good. In fact, it's setting him back. Here's a short video of M...

Brad Higgins has a video where he raises them in a topless pen. He blows a whistle at feeding time, and they learn to come to the food. As they mature and fly out, they still fly back in to the whistle and food. He opens a gate for the walk-ins. It's a brilliant process.
