Re: NY hunting season
Here in the NW Catskills, I had plenty of grouse the end of august and some woodcock during training runs. Took Schatzie out 3 times last week to different areas, low along a creek, middle mountain along through the beech and up near the ridge with the hardwoods and found not a one! The birds seem t...

Re: New collar advice
I'm a complete rookie here and made most of the mistakes possible with schatz, but I do have a rookies point of view. I used the Garmin Pro 100 and loved the fact that I could operate all the controls, toggle the collar selector switch, rotate the level dial and hit the stim/tone buttons without hav...

How old is too old to Socialize?
It has been pointed out to me, something I guess I already know, that my dog was not properly socialized. She gets very excited around people. We live alone together in a rural area and I cant drive to get her out and about people. My question is, is 4 1/2 years old too old to socialize and settle h...

Re: Limping and lethargic
Pop, I will try hard to be nice and nonjudgemental. You need to get a handle on that dog, she must become a good citizen. Learn to examine your dog, you should have found the puss filled blister. You may need another vet, I would not accept, "I would operate but she is a bad patient when it comes t...

Re: Limping and lethargic
Thank you all for the support. I do not drive so rushing her down to the vet is not an option for me/us, it takes about 3-4 hours to get a cab and it is expensive, ~$200. (she passed out around 3:30pm and the vet closes at 5) But, I took her to the vet yesterday. She seemed much better alertness wis...

Limping and lethargic
Looking for more guidance than I can find in my vet encylopedia. Schatzi was limping badly on her right rear leg yesterday, putting no weight on it. A short while thereafter she essentially passed out. I could only get her to slightly open her eyes. The limping happens every so often and may be a re...

Record heat coming
Hi, were expecting record heat in the next few days and I wonder if anyone has any advice on keeping a high strung pointer comfortable. Schatz will be coming home from the trainer on Thurs and I know from last year that summer is the worst for her. She is very physically active and does not like to ...

Re: Reintroduction to Water?
Hey!! I just spoke with her trainer and she is swimming and retrieving ducks off a pond. He said she really likes it. I guess a wing clipped or shot duck is what did it for her. Probably focused her attention on getting that dang duck and not the water. I am really proud of her! Her upland work is a...

Re: Tracking collars
I purchased the Garmin alpha to hunt grouse in the Adirondacks. Pro's - I now use it around my local hunting grounds and long walks in the woods. It is VERY accurate and can show my dog's position down to feet relative to busy roads etc. Training functions allow me to warn/call her when I see on the...

I'm a sole practitioner patent attorney. I mainly ghost write for other law firms.
Great profession, I get to see a lot of new medical procedures and devices and a whole lot of people's "better mousetraps".

What birds to start with?
I am going to put in a bird cage and small flight pen and was wondering if any particular bird is much easier than others to keep? I am in the north west catskill of NY where winter temps get down to -20 so I do not think I'm going to overwinter the birds. I do have my NY class B game breeders licen...

Re: Game Birds or Chickens in Yard?
No advice, but have a similar situation. I'd like to put in a bird pen/flight pen close to the house. Will the dog get desensitized to constantly being around birds? Hope the more experienced will give some guidance on keeping birds close to a kennel/house. In my case, I have too many coyotes around...

Tell us a little about you so we can get a perspective on who we are talking to. How old are you?? Male or Female?? What do you do for a living?? How long you been hunting/shooting?? What kind of hunting do you do?? What kind of dog(s) do you have?? How long have you had dogs?? You into any field t...

Re: Teaching Sit to Pointing Breeds
I taught Schatz to sit early on. Now the trainer says that's what she does for him after pointing a bird when he comes up to shoot.
She doesn't do it with me though.

Yes, I have been since I was 12. That's when Mom found me a gun club that had a junior division.
When I had spare cash, I upgraded to lifetime membership.

Reintroduction to Water?
How do I go about re-introducing my 4 1/2 year old dog to water. As a pup she would wade in and swim small circles, swim out 10' or so for bumpers, etc. But now she is reluctant to go swimming, she is a Drahthaar and her parents were great waterfowl dogs swimming alongside kyacks. She had one bad ex...

Re: Stupid questions from a newly....lol
I have a new French Brittany pup that I am starting to train and have a quick question. The question pertains to command words WOAH and HERE. Does anyone use other words for these commands like possibly....STEADY and COME...? Only reason I am asking is because WOAH sounds a lot like NO and HERE sou...
