If you consider American Field a "network" it would be a pretty big one. Magazine printed once a week with trial reports and advertisements for every AF trial in the country.

Re: Newbie questions about selecting a gun dog breed
I'm a Pointer guy but I think you need a Lab. It would seem your requirements are retrieving from land and water primarily so find yourself some Lab breeders who breed working (field) dogs and go see them. You didn't mention the need for a pointing dog so I wouldn't go with the versatiles. Good luck.

Re: Decline of Field Trials
I'm going to speak from a "coverdog" perspective. I'm currently staring down 60 in a year or so and have only been involved in trials for the past 8 years. I've owned bird dogs all of my adult life but never got involved in trials until later in life for various reasons. I admit there was a stigma a...

I wonder if it's legal to shoot a moose out of a tree?
Nate
It's legal but very unethical. Even worse than ground swatting grouse.

If that pup is running like that at 10 weeks old you could have something there. You should look for a field trial club in your area and get involved.

I see the name "Ryman" back a ways on the top side so I would guess the sire's breeding to be the "Ryman" type of dog. The bottom side is very good cover dog setter breeding. I would think they would hunt fine.

I wouldn't think you would want to restrict his range if he is actually hunting and casting at 600 yrds. Whatever you take away from his range you more than likely won't get back later if you want it.
I'm not sold on that. If a young dog shows it has the run in him it will usually come back....

Reading all this makes me happy I have the opportunity to compete in coverdog trials where we can trial and hunt the same dogs on wild birds. Virtually every coverdog champion that I know of is a hunting dog. I'm saddened to hear that is not the case in other venues. Ain't that the truth. Put a dog...

There is no "UP rule" it's just that these handlers know if they are getting it done or not and the last hour would have to be pretty spectacular with two UPs in the book. And a UP is a UP whether the birds ran, flew or took a crap there an hour earlier.

I run pointers in coverdog trials in N.B. and New England as well as some walking trials in Region 1. I took up the sport late at age 50 after 30 years of just hunting my dogs. Have won a few trials but no champions yet. It's a lot of fun and I get to hang out with Winchey.

I have a friend who loves his 20 gauge Yildiz. I prefer a Browning or Beretta but if that's your price range I expect you will like it for what you paid. The gun will do fine with any load I expect but your shoulder might be mad at you if you pound a bunch of heavy loads out of it. If you use light ...

Re: Style v Efficiency, and or other arguments that divide

If you buy from field trial stock you are banking on the opinion of several independent judges that have put ch's on that pedigree. If you buy so called "hunting dog" stock you are often taking one man's opinion. I say if you buy well bred pups the best you might get is a field trial champion and th...

Re: Differences between pointers and GSP's
I've had both and currently have pointers.
Shorthairs are better at game recovery for sure.
They also have that desire for fur that the pointers seem to grow out of.
Pointers are lighter footed in the grouse woods and break-out much easier. IMHO
