Gun shy...maybe.
So I've done a ton of yard work with my dog myself, and sent him to the trainer for 2 months to polish him up. He's doing great, holding his points and is steady to wing shot and fall. He does try at times try to dive in on birds he can see on the ground about 1/4 of the time. We're working on clean...

Re: Breeders - Do you sell your pups to non-hunters?
I'm a younger family man that was looking for a training partner to run with me daily (im a marathoner), and dog that was great with kids. It landed me on the Vizsla and after waiting a couple years we found a breeder and a puppy that was perfect for us. When I got him home he began pointing on "ble...

Vizsla socialization tips?
My V is almost 9 months old now, and hes nearly perfect in every way. His training is going great in the field and he is awesome at home with the family (sans the counter surfing, but we are working on that!) However, he does have 1 slight problem and I am trying to figure out if I should be worried...

Re: Flight pen near kennel
I have a smallish back yard and have wondered the same thing. Hasn't been a problem so far... he still has a huge prey drive in the field and I am sure he can smell the birds daily.

So it's ok to give your dog a live bird as a reward as long as you as the handler are giving him the bird and not allowing him to run on it/pounce etc? Want to make sure if I do this I am doing it right.

Re: Finishing Stand/Whoa command
This is why I am so glad I found this place. Thanks for the replies guys, I am going to step back and realize how quickly he is progressing and take it easy.
We have a lot of fun together learning (both of us), and he really is an incredible dog.

Re: Finishing Stand/Whoa command
Are you working him on birds? If he's not steady to wing yet I wouldn't try to walk around him or anything. Just stop him between birds and walk in front of him and act like you're flushing birds. Once he's steady to wing, introduce "whoa" as a cue to stand, then you can test him more. Take him upw...

Re: 5 month old Vizsla training
I am in the same boat as you, trying to figure out what is best and our Vizslas are close in age (mine is 5 months today). I get mixed opinions too on when to send him to the trainer but one thing is constant... "get him on birds early and often". Buy pigeons, do whatever you gotta do... but get her...

Finishing Stand/Whoa command
So i read a few books, and decided to go with "training with mo" for my guide. It's working out great but I am having trouble with getting my dog to stay on all fours and still when I walk all the way around him. He does awesome if I command him to stand even in mid-run. He also will allow me to wal...

I get to WFH, so luckily I have time to let my V run as much as he wants in the fields by our house....I shudder to think what his behavior would be like without the exercise...and he's just 5mos old

Re: Small skin bumps on Vizsla
You might try feeding another brand of dog food. Something with different ingredients then you're feeding now. Sometimes I've noticed a change in those types of conditions when I change foods. Thanks Gordon, I actually have noticed these bumps for a while now and they just recently became worse to ...

Small skin bumps on Vizsla
Lately I have been noticing some small skin colored (white raised) bumps on my pup. They dont seem to bother him, and appear to come and go over the course of a few days. I asked around to some friends of ours that raise/foster GSP's and they mentioned their dogs encountered this a time or two as we...

Re: Victor hi pro plus
For those that use this what are you paying for a #40 bag? Just bought some hoping it is as good as Loyall since I can't find it in Mi anymore. I have been extremely happy with Victor Hi-Pro Plus, I hate say what I pay because I am getting a very good deal, however average around here seems to be a...

Was referred to this food by my trainer who is not a paid promoter of Victor, it just works. Switched my dog to it and hes done so much better than he did on Blue Buffalo... and its WAY less expensive.

Re: Anyone ever experienced this on a hunt? (GSP kills Coyote)
Must admit, did not watch the video. No reason too. In all due respect, bad decision by the dog owner to allow this to happen. Bad decision on the part of the moderator's not to delete original post imo. Can't Coyote's carry rabies? Was the dog wearing an e-collar? Sorry, don't intend to offend any...

Re: Anyone ever experienced this on a hunt? (GSP kills Coyote)
Couple points: 1) Not as uncommon as you would think, especially in my neck of the woods. 2) The dude is an idiot for taping it, and an even bigger idiot for posting it on Youtube. I wondered if this was against the law in any way? Seems he's putting his dog at risk but maybe I am wrong. If you hav...

Re: New Vizsla Pup-Questions/Advice
My V is almost 5 months now and finally getting better about mouthyness. We yelped when he would bit down on our hands and gave him plenty of opportunity to do so, just like explained above. Yelling at him or losing control accomplishes nothing, letting him know it hurts when he bites down helped a ...

Training Vizsla pup, questions re: pedigree
I didn't intend to get into this new hobby, I bought a Vizsla after researching them as a running partner the last couple years. However, I kept seeing my pup in the back yard pointing at birds on the fence and thought it just wasn't right he would never hunt! A trip to Cabela's and a 870 purchase l...
