Re: trainer for the casual hunter
I think a good trainer will ask you want you want out of a pup and try to accommodate. But the development of the dog is a process- building blocks. IMO general OB and socialization is started when the pup is young and progresses or transitions to cooperation in the field. The tracking, retrieving i...

Re: Anybody using an interesting theme in naming their dogs?
Well-we told our kids we were getting a pup and they can earn points toward naming him by doing chores. I did throw in last approval rights though... So after 7 weeks of getting a lot of stuff done around the house, clean bedrooms my kids (5 and 7) threw out the names they had "earned". Ended up wit...

Re: SHould i say fetch?
Let me try this again Ezzy and Polmaise. When a dog is sent on his name for a marked retrieve and is unsuccessful, pressure is never or rarely used to correct the dog. A bird boy may help him, the trainer may walk out and help him but pressure is never used on the dog. See the difference? With the ...

I think my boy quieted down fully after two weeks. One week he would get up once in the night and whine...NEhomer wrote:Lol....guess my guy was just easier marsh.

Re: puppy loud in kennel
My PP pup did not like to be kenneled. Did all the tricks I knew... alarm clock in the kennel, the old kind that tick, put his kennel next to my bed and put my finger in the kennel door to insure he knew I was there... slowly he quieted down and slept more and more. It is tough to hear them cry but ...

WELCOME!!! Maybe you should look at some of those versatile breeds since you seem to hunt both upland and waterfowl. The weims would do it- but tough on them in the cold weather...

I thought I remember someone telling me that if you cut a PP's hair it will grow in softer. Not sure how true that is-but might want to check into it.

Agreed- hope that everyone made it through with no issues. Was not that bad here in Michigan. Just a cold steady rain most of the day where I am at. But I know that there was a lot of people not as fortunate.

Re: New From Michigan GSP Pup
I think there is a place in Chelsea, Colonial Farms, that offer some training programs for hunting dogs. Can"t remember if it is hourly one on one training or programs that they work with owners in a group setting weekly. I have never participated in these- but have heard good things about them from...

Re: New From Michigan GSP Pup
Just keep it fun and try to make sure that the exposure to the birds wont be negative. I think I mentioned this to you- but I had my pup at the NAVHDA training days right after his last shots. I had quail that were wing tied or restrained and let him sniff, explore, bite... I did not expect anything...

Re: english setter puppy growing up with Lab
If it were my pup- I would not worry that much about his observing my lab and its behavior. I would however make sure that both the lab and the pup get some time where they are on walks and in the field only with me. I have seen a couple dogs that get so dependent on running with the "pack" they kin...

I own a Manufacturer's rep firm... Basically I am an independent sales person for companies. Most of the products I sell go into automobiles. I am happy to say I sell only products made in the USA. Pretty tough to do these days... I also design and sell some process equipment used in the chemical, m...

Re: Introduction- New member from MI.
His prey drive is off the charts. But he seems to be OK as far as listening and obeying commands. But I am sure he will go through the stage of wanting to do things his way- like some of my other dogs have. But so far so good. He has an off switch and is a pleasure in the house- as long as he gets h...

Good luck with the new pup. I moved to Michigan from around the Mars, PA area quite some time ago. Most of my family still lives down that way. Love and miss those old hills.

I am a member of the SEMI NAVHDA chapter. If you want to check it out they have training days this weekend on Saturday I believe. I have to check the schedule to make sure that they did not move this to Sunday this weekend. Lots of great people there and lots of good dogs. They train at the Barn cou...

Introduction- New member from MI.
Good day all. Just wanted to introduce myself since I am new to these forums. I am located in SE Michigan and have a Black pudelpointer that just turned a year old. He is showing a lot of progress and I am excited to see how things progress this year. I had him out in the grouse and woodcock covers ...
