Re: My Reba solid on point

I'm in SoDak too, but out west. Our bird numbers have been pretty decent it seems. Tons of grouse too, more than I've ever seen.

I have heard that, but what is public land access like out there? I would just hate driving 5 hours and hunting blind in Wyoming.

Re: Smoking Recipes

Brine the whole breast in a mixture of water, salt, brown sugar and worchestershire sauce. Then smoke with Jack Daniels Smoke Chips. That's my favorite. You can then go to work on cutting off chunks when its finished and it adds a great flavor to wild rice soup.

Re: cameras?

I shoot a Nikon D90, but it is overkill price wise honestly. Unless you are a professional photographer, most camera bodies are relatively the same, so spend less on the body and more on the lens. You honestly can't go wrong with a Canon T3i Rebel. For the money they are the best package cameras you...

Re: Mud river dog bed worth the money?

I only have experience with the Mud River kennel pad. It seems to be of good construction. He hasn't chewed holes in it yet. I would assume the dog beds are of the same quality as the rest of their products, but if a dog is intent on chewing through it there isn't very many materials that will have ...

Wyoming Chukar

Well, this pheasant and grouse season was phenomenal with my almost 2 year old GSP really coming into his own. I want to branch out and try some chukar hunting though. I have always wanted to do it, but it's not exactly a common birds on the plains of South Dakota. I have heard rumor of decent chuka...

Re: Help me find a BOOT

I always run Obenaufs Heavy Duty LP over any leather boots I own, even if they are labeled as waterproof. That Obenaufs does wonders for boots honestly. And really rub it into the seams good. You should be good to go. My 400 gram Thinsulate Danners, nor my uninsulated Cabelas Kangaroo Upland boots h...

Orvis Sling Pack

So, I bought an Orvis sling pack, and I am absolutely satisfied with it at this point. I haven't put it through heavy use yet, but its fantastic. It has space for dog bowls, a coat if need be, gloves, extra supplies and it has attachments for water, shells, and a radio/collar transmitter. This thing...

Ive had that happen as well. When the dog ranges far out and you hunt behind guys who only have ever used flushers they get mad hahaa.

Re: Looking to get my first hunting dog

You came to the right place. This is exactly where I came for my first pup (GSP). Than again I almost exclusively upland hunt with a bit of jumping stock ponds in there as well for duck. But with your consistent waterfowl hunting I would go with a good lab. If it is a backyard breeder make sure you ...

I do, but it's tought to train that point without pigeons, because you control when they flush.

Re: Pointing vs. Flushing

I'm in Rapid City lol, so the far west end. I've had my dog out hunting probably 2-3 times a week last hunting season. Definitely need to keep training though. I used to get pigeons from the local Cabela's they have a pigeon problem and would catch them and they would leave them in a box for me but ...

Re: Pointing vs. Flushing

Why would you shoot more huns and sharptails on a pointer? Hunting grouse in these parts has taught me that the flightiest "bleep" bird out there is a grouse. Rarely it seems do they hold tight enough to get a point. Often times they will flush 20-30 yards ahead of my dog, that makes for long shots...

Re: Upland tips and trips

Usually any Game Production along the Missouri River in South Dakota is good, just bring steel shot. Depends on the time of season and whether or not the land has been harvested and is stubble or not. Pretty hard to beat pheasant in north central SoDak.

Pics were taken at one of my favorite Grouse hunting spots. Sometimes the little guy points mice too hahaha, I think I need to break him of it. http://i826.photobucket.com/albums/zz184/gunner2292/Bear%20Butte/DSC_0001.jpg http://i826.photobucket.com/albums/zz184/gunner2292/Bear%20Butte/DSC_0040.jpg

Thanks for all the great responses everyone! I guess i dont see the relevance in arguing color blindness. Everyone has different methods and im sure just as many dogs were properly trained using blaze orange to mark a launcher as were the number of dogs and trainers who didnt.

Re: Launcher Questions

They were both excellent well said replies thank you! The only issue this year was the grouse we were hunting were in the cheyenne River breaks so it was pretty open country and they were pretty spooky. They would often flush before he would catch scent, but I feel like there were quite a few birds ...

Launcher Questions

Hello all, I'm relatively new to training, especially pointers, and I have a 12 month old GSP who has been doing very good in the field but I want to sharpen his pointing abilities. I have a launcher and access to pigeons so I have a few questions regarding it. Once the pigeon and launcher are hidde...

Hello, my name is Shae and I am 23 and I'm from South Dakota. I've been bird hunting since the state would legally allow me. It basically became my number one hobby and I also now have a year old gsp to compliment that. Currently my life is consumed with school (social studies teaching major) and I'...

Okay thanks for the help! I was just curious because he's my first GSP and I wasn't sure if it's abnormal. Also does anyone have any experience with pigment loss? The right side of his nose is pale white ish. I heard could be the plastic in his bowl to just "winter nose"?

Dog Size Question

Hello Everyone, My question was about my GSP pup. He is almost a year old and probably weighs in at 50 to 55 pounds. When do males fully mature, because I was under the impression that males got quite a bit bigger. No issues if he doesn't, he is a phenomenal little hunter, but I was curious as to wh...

I ended up picking up a GSP pup from a breeder near Mitchell and I have been impressed by its drive and natu...
