Re: post hunt effects on dogs
Well keep in mind you are hunting in a unique environment. I always struggled with dehydration in dogs in New Mexico and Arizona. That is correct that a young dog can kill himself there with too much running and will pay the price that evening. If you want to stay out for extended time periods you w...

They are handy to teach searching for cripples... Wear gloves to disguise your scent, Fasten wings to your dummy or piece of wood, douse with the matching bottled scent, tie dummy to long rope, put on rubber boots, drag it through tall heavy cover, leave it in a likely patch, go get your puppy- it's...

I know it didn't rain in ND until August this year. No rain = no insects = no baby game birds.
Tough year for lots of farmers too.
Tread lightly if you go, there are birds in places but not many young of the year.

Look for valley quail west of where you are. If you haven't had a chance to hunt this bird before they are well worth it and a good match for your pointing dogs. Don't write off eastern WA for quail and chukars especially the Sun Lakes, Columbia River and Snake River country. It is worth licensing i...

+1 Get to know the public land managers in your communities, go to meetings, do your homework, get involved. The parcels that were proposed for sale have no public access, they are called "land-locked". No management, no access, no nothing, squares on a map. I don't advocate selling public lands. Th...

I like the tight wool gloves with the rubber grip dots on the fingers and palms. They won't slip on your gun and keep your hands warm even when they're wet. Cotton gloves are pretty useless and can make the cold worse as others have said. Cotton kills in cold weather because it won't dry, don't even...

Looks like a good hunt! Don't be too down about the burn, the aspen especially may surprise you, they do better with fire. The hard part will be keeping the grazers and browsers at bay as everything loves aspen shoots and new brush growth to chew on.

Always give the new verbal command first and then the old command (the head tap). Some of it depends on what you are into and how much time you have. Higher bird numbers in MT creates more hunting pressure because of that fact.
