Re: Pointer in water
My last brittany wouldn't retrieve. She'd find downed birds for me but simply would not pick them up. Well one day I shot a pheasant that flew out over a small pond before expiring. The dog without hesitation jumped in, swam out and brought the bird back to me. I was telling a buddy a few weeks late...

...going after stocked pheasants, ruffed grouse and woodcock here in the New England woods for the first time in 4 years!
My last Britt got lame and couldn't hunt her last few years and then I lost her last Sept.
Hopefully, my so far wonderful little setter's gonna make my autumn special this year~

Well that's rough.
I lost my first Britt at 5yrs due to some unknown brain disease. We donated her remains to Tuft's University to study. Again, a whole lotta suck.
Good luck as you move forward.

Really sorry to hear of your loss. It just seems so bizarre that an infection could take the dog down so quickly.

When my mom passed in '04 we inherited her 2yr old yorkie. Never would have bought a york but he's been a sweet little guy and he remains a reminder of her. So that's another spin on the whole thing even if a dog does outlast someone. It can't be too hard to find a good home for a beautiful, trained...

Was always able to keep my Britt off the furniture but wifey's yorkie had free rein. Now this new setter pup has weakened us with cute and he's climbin' on the couch.
There will, however, always be a no dogs in the bed rule. It's a common way to pick up a tick.

One of life's toughest moments is after you lose your pup and you drop a small piece of food on the floor. You have to pick it up instead of just tapping your toe

What ultimately disappoints me watching the NBDC is the fact that you simply cannot replicated the flush of a wild bird. Dogs catching weak planted birds is what gets me to turn it off.

I would point out that the first step in wishing to "start hunting" is not buying a puppy. The game you wish to persue begins such a quest. Flushing pheasants is a whole different ball game than retrieving waterfowl.

I continue to be baffled by the lack of popularity for 16ga. I have my late Pa's Remington autoloader in 16ga and I swing it very well. Probably won't ever seek another upland gun. I struggle with ultralight guns in the higher gauges and our tighter confines of woods and meadows here in NE makes the...

Oh, and by looking at that first pic, you probably don't want to hunt birds with either a bolt or lever action.

My pup's still a baby yet but I was looking over check cords on ebay and was wondering what considerations there are regarding length. I saw them at 10,20,30 and 40ft. Which is ideal in your experience or is it more prone to the breed, age and conditions?

Seems like just trapping them as needed would be fairly simple. Make two traps, leave one at a time. Use the other to store the ones for releasing/shooting within a couple of days. Small amount of feed and mess, no worry about diseases and if I skip a week, no big deal. I may find it bothersome over...
