Re: NY Grouse Opener Tomorrow
Hot and humid temps made for challenging scenting conditions. Hoping next day off is a little cooler.

Re: Breaking a Dog off Pointing Rabbits?!?!
Like others have stated, don't shoot at any. I also make sure my dogs know that I am not happy about him pointing a rabbit. Once the rabbit flushes and I am for sure it is a rabbit I will call the dog back to me and tell him no. Ive never had many issues with it. When I first started hunting my olde...

May as well take the time to hit the tug hill and surrounding WMA's. Look me up next year if it is something that you are interested in.

Needle nose, gauze, pressure dressing, neosporin, small bottle of peroxide. I also have some 2"x12" strips of old t-shirt cut up for splinting.

I guess I have a versatile dog
I have had two encounters with bear in the last two years. Both were very interesting and both dogs reacted the same way to the scent of the bear. Last year my then 6yo Llewelyn Setter Pete started acting really strange while hunting. The behavior he was showing made me think something was wrong wit...

10 week setter , what should I be doing
Make sure u are taking him outside every half hour. I know this sounds tedious because of how much u are going to have to monitor him while you are home. The dog will begin to realize and understand that he has to relieve himself outside/on the grass. You will gradually start seeing him going to the...

Let him have tons of fun. As oldbeek said prior to my post. Take him for walk in fields and wooded areas as much as you can while he is young. Change directions periodically and let him quarter to your direction this will help down the road. While doing this over time u can incorporate a command or ...

I agree with Mountaineer. I like to put the dog down in the AM while there is still a little dew on the ground. In the evening the scenting conditions pick up the later it gets. I basically like to hunt all day. Can't find birds sitting on the recliner. Well, at least I haven't yet..

Shags, I had a conversation last night with someone who has a whole lot more experience in hunting dogs than I do. It helped put my mind at ease. I called the vet today and said that I would continue to monitor him until my Monday appt.

In the last three days I have noticed that on the right side of my setter back by the last rib a cyst like bump has popped up. Not sure as to how alarmed I should be. He doesn't act like it bothers him I just know that it obviously isn't a good thing. Does anyone have any experience with an issue li...

Be patient with him and don't be in to big of a hurry while he transitions to wild birds. Exposure is key. He will need a lot of exposure on wild birds. The best part is that you will see it all come together.

Just think before there were pumps and semi autos guys were using single shots. Sure you won't be able to follow your first shot but that doesn't mean you are at a disadvantage. Just means you really have to pick your shot. I hunted with a single shot for a few years.

I find a majority of my grouse in the alders when all the berries start to grow scarce. The grouse will begin to bud on the Alder and Aspen. I have been shooting woodcock with great success the last three weeks. Make sure you don't overlook the new covers. Hunt all of it you never know where the bir...

Watching a setter quarter and come a hault while in the Grouse woods is something that i havent been able to shake. Pure addiction. My setter pretty much changes his range depending on the type of terrain/cover that we are hunting.

The GSP I was referring to is a Bubby of mines pup. Just isn't exposed to grouse as much as my setter hence back to the argument that a good grouse dog is exposed to the birds..

Grange,
I guess to each there own. I hunt with a GSP who runs hard nose down and I am still waiting to see this dog pin/hold a bird. But hey maybe I know nothing. Not totally ruling that one out lol.

I would like to think it is takes both good breeding and a lot of exposure to the birds in order to have a dog that can consistently points and hold birds. This is a great post BTW. I have been hunting grouse for a while now and have a Llewelyn (Pete) who impresses me every time I take him out. IMO ...

My Llewellyn is a great dog for me on foot. I kill grouse, woodcock and pheasant off of him. Range is perfect. It's all about how you train him. He will know when to open it up and when to close it down depending on how the terrain is. I was told that any good dog has to be able to know when to Rang...
