Just finished Upland Autumn and Grouse Feathers. Both very good books but I did enjoy Upland Autumn a bit more because of the relationships he describes with other people. Brought a lot of memories back of those hidden "honey holes" I hunted with my dad and grandfather when I was growing up. Sure ma...

Wirehaired Pointing Griffon vs Pudelpointer
I have a 2 yr old PP bs regularly hunt with a guy who has a WPG. Similar but my PP can swim all day in water. Just loves it. I use her for all upland and waterfowl as does my buddy with the WPG. His will definitely hunt everything but won't seek out water like PP. that said she hunts very close whic...

Maine grouse
Anyone go to Maine for grouse? I deer hunted in the Great North Woods a few years back and recall seeing a bunch of grouse walking around while still hunting. Just wondering if worth the trip from PA.

How Much Would you Pay for a Pup?
Wow some very interesting replies. Many with a lot of truths. When I started reading them I was on board with the 800-1200 dogs and had paid in that range for my last but she was also 15 months and had some training. I spend a bunch of time in the field and lucky enough to let my dogs run on small f...

Thanks for the comments. I would agree the quail don't go far. Even with s launcher I can point the same bird 3 or 4 times in a morning before it flys any real distance. After a while the dog does just wants to grab it. Any idea best place to get pigeons Not aware of any in my area of NE PA

Pigeon or quail
I was wondering on others thoughts as to whether I should use quail or pigeons for training my dog. I used quail last summer with no problems. I see quite s bit of folks use pigeons. Is one more preferable then the other. I used quail because of the price $4 a piece and they flew back to a pen I had...

Thanks for the input. I am hesitant to trim but I took her for a 3 mile run yesterday and she could not wait to jump in the lake on the return. Must have stayed in the 30 minutes swimming around with some geese. I think I will see how she does with a trim but will first check to see if it will make ...

Wondering if any of you shorten your dogs coats for the summer. My Pudelpointers loves the water but when the weather warms up she wants to just relax in a water tub or pond when not doing some activity. Wondering if trimming her coat would make her more comfortable

what is my best choice for whistle command.....NOW?
That is some good advice regarding pointing dogs. My pudelpointer points well on upland and when I started training I incorporated a whistle basically to just call her back during waterfowl situations of safety such as getting to close to swift water. The training I was using had me teach a number o...

Closing day ... what do you remember most?
Most memorable this season was a late December hunt in PA on public land. Hunting with two buddies our 2 dogs point a single covey of 7 pheasants. Smack dab in the middle of a knee high field of grass. For just a few moments I felt like I was hunting those famed fields of the upper Midwest. All in a...

I have dog that was injured in the elbow as s pup. Actually broke it. Use to have noticeable joint pain until I put her on Cosequin DS. Give her one a day and even running her 4-5 hours ad day a few days in a row doesn't seem to bother her. Vet said as she gets older it won't help as much but it def...

Congrats. I have found the most luck on grouse shortly after a thick fluffy snowfall. Birds seem to sit under pines or hide on the side of small embankments hiding in the snow. A trip watching them bust out. All you see is a small hole I the snow. There must be a bush or something they hide under th...

Quick question. I have a 1 1/2 yr old Pudelpointer that is insanely attached to me. Seems to drive my wife crazy. The dog is a females and always has to be in sight of me. I picked up a CZ redhead about a month ago. You can shoot steel but not recommend for full or IM. Might want to also consider some of the other nontoxic shot although steel is significantly cheaper if I recall "bleep" was selling #6 steel for about 6 a box.

You should just be happy you found a PA grouse. You are over thinking your dogs reaction. Grouse as you know are way more skittish then stocked PA pheasant. My dog can hold a point forever on a stocked pheasant but the grouse fly even when the dog stays locked

Where did you get the puppy. Should look somewhat like the parent. I have seen puppies similar posted on a breeders site last year. I want to say it was a breeder in Ohio but might have been Michigan. Either way definitely won't look like mine. She has a longer coat with grayish strands within the l...

20 pheasant in the freezer and missed as many, some geese and a duck smoked and eaten. Only skunked once and that was b/c I missed a couple grouse. Late season just coming in so plenty of days left. All this on my new pudelpointer. She is just over a year old.

I use a bell but am curious if any finds that a bell or beeper spooks birds. Not sure I noticed one way the other but use her bell mostly for thick grouse cover. I am curious what others think of spooking birds.

I hunt PA and one problem is the law prohibits hunting standing crop without owner permission. It becomes frustrating at times. I usually send the dog in (I have a pudelpointer and hunt with a guy with a griffon) but the birds run til the end of the corn. Yes I max limit routinely but not my favorit...

What states have huntable pheasant populations?
I hunt PA all season and regularly limit out but all the birds are stocked. Best bet for PA is to look at the game lands the state stocks and hit the area within the First three days after it is stocked. Stocking ends Dec 19th but the season goes well into Feb. finding birds after the new year takes...

I bought a SA-08 20g this summer for my son. I liked it so much I carry more than my citori o/u 12g. I never had an issues and eats any shells I feed it. I use 3 in Benelli for duck which is to heavy for carrying in the field all day. All of them sure beat the Ithaca pump I carried as s young lad.

I hunt in Pa normally with 2 or three other folks. I have a 16 month Pudelpointer that will just hunt for me. No real roaming but she she hunts close anyway due to thick cover we hunt. She will retrieve if someone else shoots a pheasant but only brings it back to me. I should point out some of the o...
