Re: Late season NY report
Was at it this weekend. Over towards binghamton the snow has melted with about 60% of the ground cleared. But it was cold. Not a single grouse seen or heard. Any advice for this late season hunting.

Re: NY Grouse Opener Tomorrow
Max2 Really about the am hunts for grouse? I am new to this game but read somewhere that you should give them a couple hours after sunrise to get off the roost and walk around a little. Next time I will try earlier and save the bow hunting for the PM hunt only. Like Marc said grouse hunting is a lot...

Is this creeping??
Have a question. I had my 3 yr old gsp out on some preserve birds (chukar) this past weekend. This a dog I basically trained myself with some Navhda help. A hunting dog companion only type of dog as I am not into competitions. I understand that he is supposed to stop and point on first scent so my q...

Re: NY Grouse Opener Tomorrow
I will be going up Friday afternoon through Sunday.
Weather was looking off and on but Saturday looks like it will be a good day. Not too hot. Planning on bow hunting in the am and pm and hunt the dog from 10 to 3.
Hoping to find some timberdoodles along with grouse.

Number of hours hunted per day.
Had a general question for the north east grouse / woodcock hunters. On a given day, what is the average number of hours that you are out hunting. Where I hunt in New York southern zone by Binghamton most of my spots are generally small. At a casual walking pace to let the dog work I may be in and o...

Last year he did well with preserve birds and pigeons. No wild birds shot out to him yet. This year working even better when ...

Re: NY Grouse Opener Tomorrow
Was up in Chenango this past weekend for the opener. Hunted in the afternoons with the dog. Overall better than expected. Had 5 flushes, one was a double, and got off two shots at the second bird from the double flush. Its still flying til this day.

Re: NY hunting season
Because of the wind this weekend and all the leaves on the trees only flushed (confirmed) one grouse but no way for a shot. Only saw him when he jumped off the grouse and a tan flash 20 yards later. Good news is my spots are loaded with apples and hawthorne berries or fruit. Plenty for them to eat. ...

Scott, Just wanted to jump in and tell you how much I enjoy your show. Not enough bird dog shows out there.
Great tips during the show and look forward to the grouse episode.

Re: When to shoot a wild bird over a young dog.
No I didn't have a chance as he was young and I was inexperienced. I do own land upstate New York and took him on frequent runs (for lack of a better word) to cut him loose, call him back and overall get him used to the woods and listening to me. Then in winter we got dumped with snow so that put a ...

When to shoot a wild bird over a young dog.
Hey all, I have a question, I have a 16 month GSP male that has been training with NAVHDA since July 2014 and has been pointing birds well each time out. I am new to pointing dogs but have read all I can and trying to steady him up and get him to whoa (in the yard to later transition to wild or plan...

Getting dog geared up for grouse.
Had a question. I have a 15 month old gsp male that was just recently started in NAVHDA in July of this year. He pointed his first planted chukar hard and has been doing well ever since. I have also been running him on wild birds (or at least in the grouse woods) since then but being that the woods ...

Running dog on wild birds???
A little about myself. I have a 15 month old GSP and got started into NAVHDA in July of this year. Have done a lot of yard work with him but only recently exposed him to planted birds as of last month. I have been working with my dog on learning all the basic commands and have begun Whoa training. N...
