don't use anything with zinc in it
zinc oxide is poisonous to dogs .

I believe it takes 24 hrs to become effective.
its a sturdy collar compared average with no metal involved.
I put it on in summer and take it off in march after the season ends

it really depends on what the collar main use is.

if your looking for training and timing is critical use a sportdog.

at 4 months old , I wouldn't worry . I would stop using bird parts ,the dog is old enough to meet his first real bird though.
