Re: Let's see/or tell us what your favorite training tool is
In early development hands down it would be a Garmin (4 months to 14 months old) when you start formal training it would be a leather pinch and a 12 foot check cord. But if I have to pick a favorite, it would be a Garmin. This is coming from an upper mid-west grouse hunter with pointing dogs.

Re: Whoa command
In my opinion one of the most difficult things for an inexperienced owner to do is sort through ALL of the different information on training. First you should decide what your goals are for your dog, then find the "method" that fits your goals. I've attached an article written by Bob Farris who is o...

yeah no quiet time here and I live on 10 acres of fairly old growth forest. Without knowing your personal goals (Wild bird hunting or Pheasant Preserves), and the temperament of your pup I would tell you to go out and have fun. My goals are entirely centered on having him point grouse and woodcock. We are in MI and our quiet time (for nesting) starts on April 15th and ends...

Thanks. sort of feeling this out at I go. I'm trying to follow the George Hickox plan via DVD. A few things I'm unclear about that maybe someone would clarify for me: 1. GH recommends introducing birds early (before 12 weeks) and then gun conditioning when they'll chase clip wings with intensity. I...

Please reconsider having any medical procedures done, at least for a month or so. This is not your dog, and you do not know if the owner is trying to locate him. Sounds like your well on your way, you let your puppy be a puppy and let wild birds develop its drive Now that you know she hunts and points. I would take this opportunity to teach her "whoa". Teaching her to "Whoa" or "to Stand her birds" can be done in several ways. I respectfully have to disagree...

Just because a dog “comes from so and so’s line” doesn’t mean the pup you will be getting can do the job you will be asking it to.
