Re: Which lab belongs to who?
I always thought of it as show breed and non-show breed labs as well until I was told otherwise.

Re: Which lab belongs to who?
Thanks guys for clearing that up. I figured my wife was right, but there was still that part of me that doubted. Should have known better. I did notice you guys talking about field trial labs (more American type) vs the British style. Was wondering what made one a field trial lab vs a non-field tria...

Which lab belongs to who?
My wife and I got into a debate about which lab belongs to which origin. I thought the taller, thinner lab was British and the shorter, stockier lab was American. She seems to think its the other way around. Not sure who is right. The only thing I do know is that the show labs tend to be the shorter...

Thanks for the useful information.
Sharon
Thanks for the offer. Got some friends in the Schomburg, Ontario area that could get it to me, but I think I will be ok with the .410.

Is a .22 blank worth it?
I'm at the point now where I'm contemplating the intro to gun fire. I just have one dog, so I was wondering if getting a blank .22 was worth the investment or if a .410 would be fine (which I already have)?

Re: Which sex do you prefer?
I agree that sex doesn't have any affect on their ability to hunt. From my experiences, females tend to want to hunt with you, while males hunt for themselves (on occasion more than females). I'm not saying that all males do, but it seems they are corrected more than the females I have seen. I know ...

Re: GWP and DD
I'm gonna agree with you Ezzy, but I also disagree. I agree that it takes more than just cross breeding to make a breed. Where I disagree with you is when you cross two different breeds in the same discipline like a English pointer and a GSP who are built similarly and have the same drive (birds) yo...

Which sex do you prefer?
Reading one of the posts on here and it got me thinking about which sex one prefers to hunt behind. I currently have a 4 1/2 month old GSP male that I am working with to be a bird dog. There are times that I think he is really smart and there are times I think he is really dumb. I know he is still y...

Re: GWP and DD
I know this has really nothing to do with the op, and I promise I'm not trying to kick the beehive, but I remember someone telling me that today's GSP was crossed with the pointers to get what we have today (all of it was done before genetic testing) and I don't mean all GSPs were crossed with point...

Got my pup from Rob Moerman in Kalamzoo MI. Got one of his last litters but he would know who has what. Been in it over 40 years and has had a really good track record. Ditto on this--and his kennel is called Abbe Lane. Who is your pup out of? Another recommendation would be Shotgun Kennels, they h...

Fish and Wildlife Retriever Training Site
Like most people on this forum we are always looking for a place take our dogs to work and what not. Was looking at my states public hunting lands to find the ones closest to me. While I was looking I came across something called a retriever training site where u could bring your own birds and shoot...

Re: In need of advise
CJ... I would love to use pigeons, but your right they can be hard to find and the people around me who do have them want $20 a bird. Now don't get me wrong, they're good racing birds, but $4 versus $20 when it comes to them dying for whatever reason sits a little better on the wallet. Guess I will ...

In need of advise
To start off on a good/fun note I started my GSP puppy on birds this past weekend and he took to it really well. Which got me thinking about having anywhere from 10-15 quail at any one give time. So I thought about building a small flight-pen (Just so they can move around on the ground) next to my p...

Re: Puppy training question
Obviously there is not point in letting him kill a song bird. This is my first hunting puppy, so I'm trying not to deter him from going after birds but at the same time teaching him to go after certain kinds of birds. I probably put too much thought into it, but first timers usually do.

Puppy training question
Came across a baby bird on a walk the other day that my 10 week GSP came across that I didn't see until he aleardy got a hold of it and wasn't able to get to him quick enough to stop him from killing it, so my question is what should I do if I come across this situation again? Should I let him go af...

Re: GSP or Viszlas or others???
Let me first say that I have never owned a vizsla, so I don't have any experience with it, but I have herd that vizslas can have separation anxiety which can lead to distructive habits and other things. Obviously this doesn't apply to every vizsla, but its something to think about when considering a...

Re: Puppy food dilemma
My puppy is a GSP, so it's a large breed puppy, he should be up in the larger part of the 24" 65 pounds when all is said and done. Both parents are big, especially the female, she is big for a female. This will be my first hunting puppy so any info on the breed and what has worked for other GSP owne...

Puppy food dilemma
I know this topic is probably taboo, so before anybody gets any ideas I'm not interested in causing an uproar, I just need advise. So, with that said, here is the situation, in a week and a half I will be picking my puppy up; the breeder is feeding the puppy Purina Puppy Chow Healthy Morsels, which ...

Re: What's everyone's idealistic dog?
Love all the replies, but what I'm looking for is the physical structure of a dog. For example in horses, which is what I know, I want a horse with a long front leg, knee 3/4 of the way down the leg, with the leg as far forward on the shoulder as possible. Neck needs to be coming as far up the shoul...

What's everyone's idealistic dog?
I'm pretty new to the in depth world of hunting. I've hunted behind several different kinds of dogs and have my preferences. But I was wondering what everyone looks for in a dog/puppy's? Meaning what makes a good field trial dog and what makes a good foot dog (physical build as well as mental). What...

Re: How Much Would you Pay for a Pup?
For me... It's pretty simple. The more expensive a puppy is the more I should get for it. That applies to hunting ability, attitude, and most importantly the overall health/build of the dog. With that said, I know there is always a chance you won't get what you pay for, but your odds should be highe...

A chicken issue
I have a question that I he been pondering ever since I decided to get a GSP puppy. I live on a horse breeding farm that my wife works at in Kentucky. So, there are lots of animals and humans all over the place, none of which are a real concern other than the chickens one of the gals who also lives ...
