Re: what am i missing?

You may not want to do field trialing. Have you looked into NSTRA? It is similar to hunting. I have no desire to compete with the dog...just would like to find a few wild birds around and make a trip or two west every year or so. That said, when I do watch field trials on tv the dogs do the same th...

Re: what am i missing?

Now I am confused Kstring. You said , " I hunted him as much as possible through the end of the season, this is all on released birds since wild quail are few and far between down here."[ and now you're saying: "I've never introduced my dogs to birds; just went hunting." If you released birds, you ...

Re: what am i missing?

They naturally have the ability to hunt, point, and retrieve. If your dog is doing that for you consistently then I believe e your not missing a thing. Have fun! I do have two questions though. How close is your dog usually getting to the bird before he locks up! Has he ever caught a bird? Thanks, ...

Re: Question on coloring of pups

Interesting that the solid allele and the black alleles are dominant...since from what I've seen they are more rare. Tho down here I haven't seen a ton of GSPs so I may just not know enough of them to make such a blanket statement. Also, as a 9th grade biology teacher I appreciate some good homozygo...

Re: Give or Drop command? And others...

I say "thank you". Don't know why but I always say that when the dog brings something to me...didn't take long for the dog to learn to give up whatever he had when I say that. I have gotten a few funny looks, but hey it works!

Re: Do you use your Labrador Retriever to blood trail?

My GSP does it. He's a natural in hunting birds but put on a leash and on a scent he looks like regular hound dog on track. I haven't trained him to do it but he has found every deer he's been out on. Doesn't seem to affect him while bird hunting.

Re: E - fencing

We use the petsafe wireless system. I like it because we have a couple places we stay during hunting seasons and it is easy to move. I do have to turn the collar to the highest power to keep our GSP in but with the high setting he won't get near the boundary. Our cocker won't get anywhere close to t...

Re: No offense, but what is up with all the GSPs?

I've owned two and both were extremely versatile. We don't have a ton of birds down here so I like the fact I can have the same dog point quail, retrieve a dove, and blood trail a deer. Mine have also been extremely loyal and natural hunters. Doesn't make them any better than any other breed but the...

Re: Alabama Bird Hunters?

I am just across the state line in West Point, MS and have recently become interested in bird dogs since obtaining my GSP about a year ago. We have pockets of decent habitat around here but I have yet to find an area holding many, if any, wild birds. There are several outfitters around here trying t...

"Gus seemed a little weary of the gun and had to be pushed a little at times." quote You were lucky. Could have been trouble. You have an exceptional dog , by the sound of it. I hunted with my Dad in the 50s. He knew nothing about gun conditioning. If the beagle was shy of the gun , he "disappeared...

Great weekend...but advice welcome

I took my 13 month old GSP out this past weekend for his first try at hunting quail (pen raised). I have never trained a bird dog so I am getting my instructions from my father-in-law who spent years hunting and breeding pointers. So, Saturday mornin myself and the paw-in-law set out some birds and ...

New from MS

I'm new here and very excited to have access to some of the great gun dog info on this site. I have a 13 month old GSP named Gus. He went on his first hunt this weekend and I was blown away with his natural ability. Still got some things to work out but I am very pleased with where he is at this poi...
