Re: Hunting trip - 10/21-29 SD?
Wisconsin might be a better option. Pheasant numbers are way down in South Dakota.

Re: Steady to flush, shot, and fall with a spaniel
Be careful with the clubs. Not all are created equal. The advise to seek out knowledgeable people with the right resources is good advise. There are many pros and successful spaniel folks in WI and MN. Maybe look into that.

Re: Why are Bird Hunters Afraid of Field Trials
We have thread "Are Field Trialers Afraid of Wild Birds" and "Are Bird Hunters Afraid of Field Trial Dogs" so I thought I'd ask "Why are Bird Hunters Afraid of Field Trials"? I run NSTRA trials and in my home region, the Mid-North (Minnesota, South Dakota & North Dakota) we struggle to get new peop...

Re: Why are Bird Hunters Afraid of Field Trials
I would love to get into trialing or testing. I have been to pointing dog trials, one NAHVDA event, and spaniel trials. In fact, I am researching my next dog and a main consideration for me is finding a dog that I could run some type of test or trial with during the offseason. I love training dogs....

Re: are Field Trialers afraid of wild birds?
Here's the scenario: Dog that has stood there and watched a bird, or covey run out from under its point. When released, the dog does not trail the birds but runs flat out with its nose high, parallel and downwind, perhaps stopping and looking/listening... until the dog goes past the bird(s) and the...

Re: The Spaniel Spot
We hunted wild birds a lot this fall. We started with a two long weekends in Wisconsin and a few dove hunts . We had good luck on grouse and woodcock. We even found a few wood ducks. Doc had a good retrieve on an early season crippled wood duck. It was also her first water retrieve. We have had a t...

Re: What are your 2016 Hunting Plans??
The first couple of weeks of September is dove season. I have 2 grouse hunts planned - one the last weekend in September, the other the second weekend in October. Both will be 4 days hunts in Wisconsin. I am hunting early muzzleloader season here in Iowa. Then it is pheasant hunting from the end of ...

Re: Place board training
gundogsonline.com has some videos. The previous posts gave you good info. You shouldn't need to buy anything. You should be able to find everything you need for free online. I really enjoy training my dog with a placeboard. I used it for basic puppy training and obedience work all the way up through...

The Internet and forums weren't even a twinkle in someones eye when I began with gundogs ! You learned ....or didn't learn.....on the job by really looking hard at the way people you wanted to emulate trained/worked their dogs. I'd had a springer and a lab for almost 2 years before I actually...

Re: The Spaniel Spot
I want to take advantage of my dog's nose, instincts, and natural ability. The mechanical drills and over-handling, excessive use of the whistle, and general micro-management of a dog risks blunting or losing completely the traits I want to take advantage of.

I have a 1.5 year old springer. We mainly hunt and occasionally test for something to do. I train every day weather permitting. The cone drills (or whatever object) to teach quartering are something I will never use. The reason I will refrain from using the drill has nothing to do with my devotion ...

I'm new to the forum. I've been bird hunting for a few years. I really enjoy it and I really enjoy watching the dogs work. I put down a deposit on a Boykin Spaniel. The pup will be arriving sometime next fall or winter. I live in Iowa. I have learned a lot from this site and I really enjoy reading r...

There isn't a ton of information out there. I've spoken with Dave Pepe out of Wisconsin who seems to a good contact for information on the breed. I posted a link below for the kennels recognized by the breed club.

Does anyone have any experience owning/training or hunting over this breed? I am considering getting one. If you have any information on this breed please share it.
