Re: "Roading" tips- bike or treadmill?
I strongly recommend a product called "Cycle Leash" I have been using one for about 10 years. It is attached to the seat post of your bike, angles out around your leg, and has about an 18" elastic strap that snaps onto the dog roading harness. I had a dog that pulled me over several times on gravel ...

Bought a DC30 from them a year ago. Shipped fast great shape, had some questions which were answered correctly. Also would buy from them again!
Re: Bits
+1 on the Myler bits. I don't even use my long shanked walking horse bits any more, just a 5" (I believe) Myler comfort snaffle. Excellent product, and actually very similar to the Imus. One of my trial partners has one, and he is happy with it. I will tell you that a horse at a trial acts VERY diff...

Re: Woodcock Migration 2017
I was seeing lots on my own farm (SE Manitoba) the week of Oct. 16- 21, and couldn't even walk my dog to the mailbox without getting one pointed. On the 16th spotted 10 over 5 clean points in an hour on my back 40. Most I've seen in a few years.

Re: Hunting late season sharptails
I have often noticed that sharptails often have a "lookout bird" sitting up in a tree while others are feeding on the ground. Makes it real tough to get close. Also in the late season, several groups will join together and make a "super covey". I have seen November flushes of 100 plus birds.

If it's a dominance thing your not the pack alpha. Reassert yourself as the pack alpha, exercise and demand the behavior you're looking for. Wow.....take it from me, you can reassert yourself till the cows come home to roost, and demand as much as you want. It's fairly likely that nothing is going ...

Go to Randy Wakeman's website and look at his preview of the new for 2017 Super Black Eagle 3. Apparently softer recoil than the SBE 2, and the Benelli click and Benelli thumb issues have been corrected. Just over 7 lbs. with 3 1/2" capability, and a great trigger. Full retail supposed to be $1999 U...

Re: What gun dogs do you have and why?
Mostly all Pointers, and 2 Setters since 1971, Vizslas before that. I have had as many as 5 Pointers at a time in the kennel, but usually had one in the house with me. Up till three years ago had 2 Pointers and a rescued Beagle in the house. I am down to one 22 month old Pointer in the house, and he...

Well I certainly am not, as I trial from time to time, and prefer dogs from horse back shooting dog lines. My current pup has an interesting group of grandparents. On the sire side grandparents are : Ch. Guard Rail bred to a littermate toNat. Ch. Miller's On Line On the dam's side: Ch. Erin's Stoney...

For more than 100 years Hounds are 'Coupled' with an older dog . Well, here anyway. If anything ,it stops anything 'Independent' . Very true. I forgot that. We always coupled our young hounds with an older dog. Exactly right....but hounds are not Pointers. Hounds run in packs and definitely d...

Re: Older dog influence
I always hunt dogs separate. But I had one instance where a young dog figured it out by watching an old dog. I had an arthritic old Pointer that pretty well had free run of the farm. I also had a 5 month old puppy I hadn't done a lot with due to work restrictions. As it happens I had a flight of woo...

I'm with Ray on this one. I'll admit I don't post very often.....but..... started with Vizslas in '63, got my first Pointer in '71, and had a bunch and a couple of setters since. Usually 2 at a time but sometimes as many as 5. Just came back from Missouri for my 18 month old pup's first stocked bird...

Re: Question for Pointer and Setter guys and gals
I don't believe there are tons of differences in running style between North American English Setters and Pointers. Probably more differences between individual dogs.
You know me. If you want to see a hot bred Pointer that moves great already at 5 months, give me a shout.

Re: Neutering question
I was just thinking about this today. I had a real nice dog that had chronic urinary tract and prostate infections. These would show up every 12 - 18 months. Two different vet clinics guaranteed that neutering would clear up the problem. So we neutered him at age 6. Despite continued workouts and ro...

Re: Who hunts in the rain?
How about pen raised birds? I plan on hunting a preserve in a couple of weeks and wondered if I should go if it's wet. You might not be pleased with quail performance if they get wet. If you go in the rain stick to phez. Chukars may be OK but haven't had much experience with them in those conditions.

I've had a bunch but the best name was "Tex". While waiting for the puppy from Pinehill Kennels, my daughter was joking about calling him "Tex from Tennessee". I went along with the Tex part, but when my son and I picked him up at the Grand Forks ND airport, we noticed he had a perfect Exclamation m...

Many years ago I had a freebee dog given to me that was ugly as a mud fence. He was also a son of Fiddler so I thought I'd give him a try. He ran a bit, but looked awesome on point. And he could find birds. But he smelled to high heaven, no amount of bathing could relieve it for more than a day. My ...

Have used beepers now for many years. Still have an old Sonic that I hope lasts forever. My hunting partner has a Tritronics. It's great having the two totally different sounds coming at different rates. Nothing worse than hunting two dogs wearing bells. Especially if one is a real close worker. You...

I bought a son of Elhew Blazin Hot from Gary some time ago as well. Absolutely the smartest pointer I've ever dealt with. Good nose, knew the difference between foot and horseback. I had bought him as a shooting dog prospect, and never cared whether he retrieved or not, but when he was 5 he decided ...

Also it won't scratch your rig. You have to use about 3" or larger or the dog(s) will bend it. Found that out the hard way.
