Dog does not seem interested in hunting
Does he have a favorite toy or treat that you could use to get him excited about hunting? My Aussie learned to flush grouse by finding his frisbee which was liberally doused in grouse scent.

First grouse retrieve for my Aussie
Finally knocked down a grouse over my Aussie the other day, which led to a first successful retrieve on a game bird. I am so jacked up! We have been seeing a ton of birds, and I've been lucky enough to harvest 5 up here so far and two back home one night while Bowhunting. I tell ya, grouse hunting m...

A dog is no guarantee of a recovered bird. Anyone that thinks so is kidding themselves. How many grouse do we hit and never know it? I've had my dogs bring me crippled birds. Mntonester did you ever have trouble finding a downed bird? That's one of my biggest fears of hunting without a dog. That and a bird that isn't quite dead getting up and running. Man I would hate to lose one that way

I don't really prefer to shoot a bird on the ground, but I have shot a few pheasants that way with my bow while out deer hunting. I just personally don't like it all that much. Awesome, thanks for the tips! I'll look for a logging road and creek beds. Do the people who hunt without dogs flush them or shoot them standing? I'm not much for shooting birds on the water or on the branch.... But that's just a personal preference. Thing with with hunting grouse with a pointer is that they may point one 150 yards away. If the bird holds until you get there, they are jittery as heck and may flush a ways out. With a flusher, as soon as he starts making game, you're on his tail. The speed of the tail tells you how close the bird...

Well it's true that a dog bred for upland hunting (a pointer) will help with the grouse, if you're doing 70% waterfowling, a lab can do nice work on grouse as well... Remember grouse dogs are made by experience, not their breed. But ultimately it's up to you! Do you hunt grouse with your springers?...

I hunted grouse with my labs and they were deadly. I think a good case could be made for the fact that pointing dogs find more birds, but you shoot more over a flusher. So, that's 70% waterfowl hunting. If a lot of that is field and not water, the DD is an easy choice. Really, I've never had mine refuse icy water, she loves it. I've lost dogs before and you do eventually get over it, but I'd rather not lose another one young.

Minneguy, I know you asked about the stamina but you also have mentioned that you duck hunt and goose hunt a couple times... The greatest trial dogs make the greatest gun dogs for hunting or for trial dogs. They are just plain, superior animals. Gun dog noses are far more capable than think--and I think to an extent the usual advice holds--that exposure and training when young can really help get across what we desire.
