Re: Need a new method.

To put this in perspective the op says the dog understands the word no. At this point if there is no consequence to a command of no, then the word is actually meaningless. If you say no and do not correct, the dog gets no benefit from you saying it. The more you use the word no with no correction t...

Re: Need a new method.

The knee to the chest is the easiest, fastest, and safest method. When the dog jumps up, knee him hard in the chest, knocking him backwards, and sharply say NO!!!. When you think he's trained, pat your chest an tempt him, then knee him hard when he falls for it. I never use and ecollar in this situ...

Yes if you go back and finish reading the statement just after the part you quoted it says And the dog knows what no means.

Re: Need a new method.

A couple of knees into the dog with the command "no" will do the job. I'm not talking about kneeing him like you're in a MMA match but enough to get the dog to focus/get off of you. I was thinking about this but couldn't decide if my son would get it right or lose his balance, also was thinking of ...

Re: Need a new method.

I have the same problem With the inlaws. They think it's cute and feel bad for him when I yell at him. Now that my weim is older I just make sure he has the E collar on and he gets a nick if he jumps. Sometimes it's harder to train people than train the dog The Ecollar will would work when he gets ...

Re: Need a new method.

Pushing the dog back and saying back, leave it or simply no will work. I use "leave it" in place of no and back. no sounds like whoa . Be sure to instill this command physically every time in the befinning so the dog knows you mean business and soon you can correct from afar. He has been doing that...

Need a new method.

My 13week GSP won't stop jumping on my son. I understand that my son is the second smallest in the pack next to him, and that he is just looking to play with him. Viewing my son as closer to his size. My son also eggs on a lot of his jumping by forgetting what not to do. Like don't hold whatever is ...

Re: When is too early?

You and the dog only. Leave your whistle and mouth at home and let him learn. Don't plan on shooting and you won't be disappointed. I think the best thing I did was hunt my dog last year. He was 7 months old thefirst ttime out. Its tough to not shoot everything that flushes but you'll sacrifice one...

Re: When does bird work start? or What age?

If you don't know how to introduce a dog to birds you probably dont know alot about training dogs. Buy George Hickocks DVD set and learn about all phases of birddog training. You are correct! Hence why the post started with first time owner/trainer. I'm not a dog trainer but I will try to get him w...

Re: Hello from the foothills of Colorado.

No birds yet. I did post looking for advise on when to do birds. I have a couple spots but There are empty lots for commercial buildings on a road down from my shop he does well in cause there has not been dog traffic or trash to distract him. but I do mix it up as far as locations. I currently work...

Re: Hello from the foothills of Colorado.

The one book I liked and seems to go along with general consensus is: Training Your Pointing Dog For Hunting and Home by Richard Weaver can't say I agree with ever line but it did help! I have a few more on my wish list. All in all I have found that there is more than one method to the madness and s...

Re: Hello from the foothills of Colorado.

Crate and house breaking was and is in the bag. No crying in his crate unless he needs to go outside and he knows to go to the door and paw it. It was natural for him. He has sit down still working on increasing his stay time and not moving until the release command. I do directional work on a lead ...

When does bird work start? or What age?

I'm a first owner/trainer. I have a 12 week old GSP. I have read a lot of material and read lot's info on here. I have read conflicting info on when to introduce birds. We currently work on all the basics daily in home randomly and in field once daily with directional work and commands. I was thinki...

Hello from the foothills of Colorado.

My name is John and my partners name is Camo. I'm a first time gun dog owner/trainer. I have daily organized training sessions with my 12week old GSP. I'm learning quickly there is not just one method to the madness and that not ever method is as affective for my youngster. I have read books and art...
