Bird dog running like a beagle
My 17 month GSP has taken to running with her nose on the ground while running in FT's. She seems to have developed this in the past few months and I am not sure how to fix this. Her prey drive is very high and she has been caught chasing deer, groundhogs, and also pretty stellar at catching birds l...

Re: Interdigital cysts on GSP
I have had those same sores on at least 2 maybe 3 of my GSP's. They seem to show up in early spring and I think it is from a foreign body in the paw from the underside that gets infected. Some have swelled up and had those same white tops on the top of the paw. I remember my dogs coming back with la...

NAVHDA Breeder Award
Silver Bullet Shorthairs just qualified for our first Natural Ability Breeder Award. Our litter whelped 12/20/12 had 4 of the 6 pups NA tested with an average score of 106. This past weekend myself and two other owners traveled to Potomac MD and ran 3 of the 4 pups with 2 of the pups (Tank and Scarl...

Re: Lupoid Dermatosis
I say this for several reasons: 1. Puppies come down with this and most dogs die in their early years. 2. We have a test that can eliminate it from our breed. 3. We don't know how this mutation works and stopping it while still a smaller problem is much easier. 4. Cancer and many others diseases are...

Re: Lupoid Dermatosis
As far as I can tell some folks like to talk about what they have known for a long time, but have they ever done anything to help rid the the GSP breed of this nasty genetic disease? The only dog that folks keep talking about openly that they think was a carrier is Dixeland Rusty. Does anyone know f...

Re: Lupoid Dermatosis
MarkJ, You will have a hard time getting folks to admit their dogs or lines are carriers or have produced the disease. Unfortunately not a lot of dogs have been tested and it seems that most of the testing are in the show lines. I have tested all three of the females that I own or co-own and 2 of th...

Re: Lupoid Dermatosis
As for problems wit the test, to the best of my knowledge and doing some digging there has been one sample out of over 800 that hasn't been explained. One result was reversed after they found that the machine reading results misread it so they went back and by hand/eye checked ALL the past test and ...

I just sent in 2 more blood samples for my other females yesterday to have the LD test completed on them. Now I will keep my fingers crossed that they come back clear. I want more choices of non-carrier males to breed to in the future.

Re: Lupoid Dermatosis
I don't know or have all the answers, but the idea is to rid the gsp of this disease. Eventually you have to stop breeding carriers, but in the beginning until the gene pool of non-carriers is larger it would be wise IMO to manage the carriers by testing.

Re: Lupoid Dermatosis
If you test the litter and it has carriers couldn't the breeder at least in the AKC registration just sell them on a limited registration? Sure the owner of the dog could breed it anyway, but the litter could not be registered. If you sold pups that were not tested from carrier/non carrier pairing t...

Most don't make it until 6 years old and they have lost their hair and require coats to protect their skin from the sun. I didn't say anything about it not being complex. The more information we have the faster we can all get rid of it for our breed.

I think doing your homework and talking to breeders is your best bet. I have GSP's and they all have off switches in the house, but some turn off faster than others. I try to make the inside house time calm and do very little playing with the dogs in the house. We play and exercise outside. Each lit...

Sounds like a dog that gets carsick. Does it drool and seemed stressed before, during, and one you get there? May get better with lots of fun outings in the new ride. Don't pressure the dog or get frustrated. Try getting it to put it's paws on the bumper as a first step maybe with a treat to help. P...

I used this test on my last litter and it pretty much confirmed what I already knew. I like the test and will do it in the future. It is just another tool, and tools are good! I do think the snapshot part makes it less reliable, but you could do it more than once and see what changes.

Re: Should birddogs be judged/titled based on conformation?
That is one good thing about the NAVHDA system, they at least evaluate a few things on the dog like bite, teeth, coat, temperament while being examined. I think it would be good for a basic report on the dog to be part of their record. I also agree that show dogs should have some sort of requirement...
