Re: AKC Pointing HT?
My 10 year old daughter handles in hunt tests. When she was 9 and just starting I would ask the judges if I could walk with the judges just so I was in contact with her. The judges love to see young handlers and are super supportive guiding them and helping them. We need more youth involved if this ...

Re: GSP or Viszlas or others???
Walk or ride some braces at field trials and hunt tests and decide for yourself.
There is no way to say one breed is better than the other. It comes down to deciding what you want and then choosing a reputable/proven breeder based on genetics and history for the traits you are looking for.

Re: Weimy trainers.........I need encouragement
I have had Weims since 1996. Sounds like you are doing ok with him. All dogs are different. Keep it fun. They are super smart and can challenge you every step of the way sometimes. Maybe take a month off and just have fun. Then return to training. Sounds like all the dots are there. They just need c...

Re: Can someone chat with me about field trials and events?
I think Wikepedia may sum it up pretty well In a field trial the dogs are competing against each other and typically have great range. Depending on where you live and hunt you may not want a dog that runs miles from you. For safety alone such as roads and whatnot. Field trials are typically run on h...

Re: Let's talk gun's . Does it matter to you ?
I have and use all types. I shoot best with my old A-5 but I like to carry my O/U because it is light. It really doesn't matter to the birds or dogs. Whatever is comfortable within your budget and you can hit targets with is best.

Go to the vizsla club of America website and contact your local rescue. There are many nice rescue vizslas that need homes.

I have the DC50 but if you ever plan on competing get the T5. I use a DC40 for competition. If you don't plan on competing and aren't buying the Alpha then it make sense to buy the DC50

Re: Backing dog design/ideas needed.....
You may want to consider the plastic corrugated cardboard. It can be bought at most lowes or Home Depots. Much lighter and easier to work with. Then just use some small drill rod like 1/16" to steak it in the ground. The drill rod fits through the corrugation. I paint them differently on each side t...

Re: Shells vs Full body??
We run full bodies around our kill zone and the front row and then fill in with shells. We fill in behind us with silhouettes. There is no substitute for full bodies especially late season when the birds are being shot at on a regular basis

Good luck finding an NEF. So far the Alphas are a great pistol. I have two. One .22 for starting dogs with crimps and one .209 for field trials. They are well built and reliable. They feel like a real gun in your hand.

Zink is a good brand but you don't need to spend 150. With some practice a 20-25 dollar call works just as good as the expensive ones. Zink makes a PC-1 with a training video for about 25 bucks if I remember correctly.

Re: DC40 and DC50 Interchangeable?
I did exactly what you did. I bought an Astro 320 with a DC 50 and a DC 40 I run two dogs but only one at a time in competition. I figured I would use the DC40 in competition and one on each dog while training. The DC50 is for sure not legal in AKC events. The DC40 is allowed but many clubs still do...

Re: quail recall houses
The predators will hone in on those free range birds pretty quick. We are at the point where the hawks are flying around within an hour after training sessions picking our birds off. I like the security of the jonny house as long as you can get your birds back in it by nightfall.

Re: quail recall houses
They cannot see the birds from the ground. It is a completely enclosed Johnny house. The recall pen solved the problem but it would have been nice if they would have learned the ramp. They would just circle the house for hours and hang around it. I even tried a sheet of plywood alongside the ramp to...

Re: quail recall houses
We are using the loin country supply Johnny house with good results. I had 30 full grown quail in it all winter. Only problem I have found is that the quail do not like to walk up the ramp to return to the house. They just hang around the house. We had to build a separate recall cage for recall. The...

Re: DC 50
I run a DC 50 and a DC 40 and I haven't experienced any of the problems mentioned in these posts. Actually I favor the DC 50 over the 40. It updates faster and the battery lasts longer plus I can download my hunts into basecamp. I use the 50 on my Vizsla and the 40 on my Weim. The V ranges farther a...

Re: Bird coop building plans
Thanks for all of your replies. I am still in the research phase of this project but leaning towards the Jonny house. Mainly because I can use quail and they appear to recall well from what I've read. I will be using one or the other. If I go the pigeon route it will be a different style house. I'm ...

Bird coop building plans
Does anyone have a material list and prints for building a decent bird coop. Will be housing quail and possibly pigeons for training purposes. This will serve as a staging area at my house. We have a big coop to keep our bulk birds at a nearby farm. We are only working two dogs. Thanks

Re: Question for those that use the astro 320/dc 50
I also use the 5 second refresh rate. I have never had an issue with battery life and it downloads our runs into a nice clean route on base camp. Also if you have a bigger running dog the faster rate helps keep the indicator and data accurate or maybe a better statement is that is more real time. I ...

Garmin replaced it no questions asked. No issues since but once again if you read about the bark function c...

Let me first clarify that I am new to this forum but not new to gun dogs. All my experience has been for fun and basically just to utilize my dogs for what they were designed to do. Hunt. I've have owned weimaraners since 1996 and currently own one weim and one vizsla. I have recently taken in inter...
