Re: Building your first pigeon coop.....
What's more important for pigeons - floor space or height. If I were to make it 4x4x2, do I make it flat box with 4x4 floor or tall box with 2x4 floor? If you are going to have enough for training, 8-10, I really think the 4x4x4 with an outside aviary is a minimum. They need both height and floor s...

Re: What's The Point !?
I'm confused I guess. Are you saying that pointers are taught to point? That it is not instinctual? If someone needs to whoa a dog to get it to point it ain't a pointer to me. Used the way it should be 'whoa' is for after the dog has pointed and is used to stop the dog from chasing after the flush. ...

Re: Bike Tow Leash
Nice review. I was just wondering if there was something like this that was safe for both dog and rider. I love to ride my bike but figured I'd be doing it a lot less with my new pup, a gwp also. Wish it were a little less but it might be something I'll need by the end of this summer.

Re: Potty Training and Extreme Cold....
I'm going through the same thing right now. I thought the end of Feb first of March was going to be great timing. It will be great in a few days as I agree with some of the earlier posters that cold seems to speed things up a little. In just two days he knows what to do first when we go out. But som...

Re: Pigeon troubles
Last fall just after getting a few pigeons settled and homing I had one spend a couple nights outside. When they get hungry and cold I think they will go in. Had they been homing and trapping well before this? I can't believe they would leave if this is where they have decided home is. The fatter th...

Re: fleas
Last year Bayer came out with a new flea collar called Seresto for fleas and ticks. Living in the southeast, we have very heavy parasite burdens( got bit by a mosquito last week), and flea populations never seem to go away. With this new product, I have heard nothing but great things about them fro...

Re: How long until your dog "got it" (birds, launcher)
It sounds like from all this that having just one launcher can help, is that right? Will running a dog on one or maybe two birds a day be enough if I can keep things controlled and launch the pigeon as soon as he hits scent? Thanks, having 3 or 4 launchers just isn't going to be an option.

Re: Pigeon Loft question
A lot of other critters you don't want near your birds can get through chainlink and larger wire openings. Sparrows, mice and rats just to name a few. They will eat feed, could bring in disease and injure or kill birds. If you do use it you'd have to block or screen it somehow. They need some rain a...

Re: Bark control device
I've seen the collars work but haven't heard of anyone having long term success with these types of devices. Might be worth a try though because I don't think the ones I have heard from gave it a long time or could set it close enough to the problem. I'm just a little leery of using loud high pitche...

Re: Bark control device
Is this for your own dog or a neighbors dog that you cant put a collar on? I've heard these only sometimes work on neighbor dogs and if it is your own then a no bark collar is a much better option. Every dog if it is barking or not will hear the sound. Not good for an area with a bunch of dogs.

Re: New Cross Breed
I saw no hunting dogs on that site. Looks like the dog version of crazy cat people. Nobody can keep as many 'project breeds' going as they do. Longhaired Weims happen and can be registered but they are not anything but a Weim with a recessive longhair gene and not a separate breed, I think that is w...

Looks good. That is something that I have always wanted to try making. Someday I'll get a little lathe.
One suggestion from someone who has lost calls before, make sure and have a good deep groove for the lanyard loop to sit in. Maybe even put one on the insert.

Check out this thread. Just what you need to hold a dozen to 15 bird for a short time, maybe 8 or 10 for longer term. http://gundogforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=15397 I like the one I built but will probably change a couple things. First I would put a 1/2 x 1 inch wire floor in it. If you wa...

What type of GWP do you want? There are some bigger running field trial types all the way to ones that are a little thicker built and closer to the traditional Drahthaar lines. If you don't mind going a ways or even shipping you could check with Dan Griffith http://griffsgrasslandkennel.com/ He is e...

Re: PP hair loss hunting
I notice it most often after hunting through the swamp reeds and the rougher grasses around the swamps. My GSP loses a lot of hair in his pits and his nose, I don't notice around the eyes though. This probably sounds stupid but what is a P.P.? I've seen it on the forum before but don't know what br...

This kind of doom talk happens every few years. I doubt that a lot of the new cropland in the central and west will be plowed up if corn stays down around $4. Some of it is poor land no matter what you do to it unless corn is bringing $7. The $7K land you hear about is good land, it isn't marginal l...

Mulga, Nice job. I wish I had thought of opening my belgium trap like that. I'm going to have to modify mine sometime so I can open it like that. The drop trap works well. I've shot plenty of wild pheasants with 2 3/4" 20ga loads. It's what I'll likely be using next weekend. 3" seems like a lot more then is needed for a youth hunt on released birds. 5s or 6s are fine.

Maybe try adding honey to the water? I've never met a dog wise enough to be proactive on hydration. Just have to have plenty of water along when they need it.

So I've made the decision to switch to all steel for my upland hunting. What is everybody having success with we're are you buying your shot and what chokes do you like . I've shot enough pheasants and ducks with steel to know that if you are shooting in timber there is little worry you should have...

What I am not so sure about the role man can have in a relative short period of time. The whole purebred thing is only about 150 years old, pointing dogs less. My observation over the past 50 years the top pointers have not significantly improved, the average however has greatly improved. First jus...

Re: Building your first pigeon coop.....
Just wanted to thank everyone for this thread. Built a coop based on Nebraska's plans. Turned out a lot better then I thought it would. Well done figuring out a simple easy to build loft for those of us with limited carpentry skills. http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii53/tjsnipehunter/974f808f-80a...
