Re: Belly collar

I agree 100 percent it is about how the trainer handles the dog, not the method. But, Pro Trainers develop methods that work for THEM and then they promote and sell seminars teaching novice trainers how to use their "method". So to the novice trainer attending the seminar, it is all about the method...

Chuckar12 - so with all your knowledge, wisdom and experience do you recommend that the gentlemen who started this threat use a belly collar on his dog?

Re: Belly collar

I have watched guys use the e-collar on the neck to correct 5 different offensives in rapid succession. They knew why they were pushing the button, the dog didn't have a clue. Moving the point of contact helps them understand a bit better. Neil Mace I use the ecollar to correct a dog for ignoring a...

Re: Belly collar

The belly collar is stiming the dog when they don't whoa/stop on command. If a dog is fully collar conditioned and generalized to the whoa command (understands that stimulation to the neck is coming from YOU, not the bird), why do you need to use a belly collar? Isn't a belly collar just a short cut...

Re: Should I be worried yet?

Michael Ellis has a great video on training the retreive. He starts with asking the dog to hold a one inch PVC pipe. He uses PVC rather than a dummy or wood dowel because it discourages chomping. He addresses how to solve a chomping problem. The video is available at Leerburg.com

Re: 4 yr old GSP- defiant/aggressive behavior

IMO, the only solution for you is to get professional help from an animal behaviorist (as also suggested by another) or put the dog down. A good place to start looking for an animal behaviorist is to contact Patricia McConnell at the University Of Wisconsin. She specializes in rehabbing aggressive d...

Re: Perfect Finish question

Pointing and holding steady, to me, is...and always should be all about being between the dog and the bird. The less I interfere in that interaction, the better the dog will end up, in terms of both function and style.... The dog has to learn that it cannot catch the bird. It has to learn that ...f...

Re: Perfect Finish question

The American Racing Pigeon Union will provide a list of racing clubs in your area. It's a good place to start when trying to locate a breeder to work with.

Re: Perfect Finish question

When I used a scent bird and launchers at a distance with tethered birds my pup (9 months) wanted to rout out the scent bird after the launches were done and she wanted to retrieve the tethered bird that kept flopping around in the distance. Her point deterioted and the only way I could have stopped...

Re: Kennel training

Wow! You guys make dog training sound so hard. It's really a lot simpler than all that. Too many gadgets and gimmicks. All you really need is a pinch collar, a check cord and a e collar. Course I'm a Dave Walker guy. 8) Doug My journey to learning how to train my first pointer pup has brought me fu...

It was identifying the trainer by name while remaining anonymous that made me uncomfortable. I respect your traing philosophy, not you personal attacks. Re: Kennel training

So in conclusion, unless members plan to post flowery compliments on this forum about their experiences with pro trainers they should be prepared to be subjected to intimidation, called a liar, and a coward (Neils hiding behind a keyboard comment) or simply uneducated about dog training. Re: Kennel training

A quick Hickox story. About ten years ago I wrote 3 or 4 articles on Buddy Smith and the Buddy Stick for Field Trial Magazine and American Field. George read them or heard about them, so he made a special trip to Collierville, TN to check it out. I don't think he adopted the Stick, but the point is...

Re: Kennel training

... So if my reading comprehension has not failed me, this pro dog trainer took a dog and stood him by a plastic crate and asked you the handler to give the command " kennel " an English word, that he had no idea whether the dog understood or not, and then corrected said dog for non compliance? No,...

Re: Kennel training

I guess I'm a little confused..., if you didn't want him to use a e-collar on your dog, why did you let him? And, if he messed the dog up with the collar at the first seminar, why would you attend another one? I should not have attended the second seminar. I made a big mistake and it cost both my d...

Re: Kennel training

That is the broadest over simplification of dog training I have heard of. Dogs are motivated to please themselves . .. Do some more research on why Georges works. But understand what it is that is happening, in the dogs mind ,and stop worrying about your own. It sounds like we just need to agree to...

The first seminar was in Ohio in April, 2013. The second was a series of four Saturdays in June of this year in Bismarck ND. In Ohio we were working in an outdoor pavilion with a kennel on the ground. The point being this was a 6 month pup, new enviroment, with 10 people standing around. He asked me...

Re: Training Programs

If it's not working for you... sometimes you have to switch. In the past 3 months I attended 8 days of Hickox seminars but I am switching to the Higgins method for training my dogs (8 and 9 months). His methods are more inline with an Agility trainer I have been following that have worked for my dog...
